Please Help! - I've read the other posts but "Difficulty engaging 2nd gear and also coming out of 4wd on Fourtrak"

Forum:

Seems I've fallen for the mainshaft nut problem, but wanted to check with the forum that something more sinister isn't happening!

2nd has always been a bit clunky but is now almost impossible to engage.

A few months ago when engaging 4L when I went back to 2H the light stayed on. I tried to reverse a good amount of times/distances but to no avail. After driving for about 5mins, 4wd light went off by itslelf. I suspected dodgy switch or something but wasn't sure of workings etc. actually, I kindof hoped it would go away! It didn't, and it reappeared and this time stayed on (the light that is) for longer. I wasn't stuck in 4wd though, just light showing.

Lastly, this happened again at the weekend when I stupidly selected 4L (I didn't even need to!) This time I was stuck in 4WD but in high??? had the usual symptoms of wheels locking up when going slowly on full lock on tarmac etc. etc. It eventually went back into 2H of its own accord after doing about 50 miles. I got up in the morning, was going to reverse for ages, but reversed out of parking space and moved forwards and voila!! Back to 2H thank goodness. Was facing an 80 mile drive in 4WD!!!

So question is are the two problems related?? Any info would be greatly apprecidated!!

Agree, it could be the mainshaft nut.

Hi Fraz,

It sounds like the very same problem that is frequently on this site..... If you use the search option on the forum section you'll probably get a clearer picture. Alarming that your gearbox is leaping from high to low whilst travelling as this should never be done whilst travelling according to the Fourtrak manual. Sorry I can't be of much more help.
