Forum:
Hi,
I have a 96 hijet 998 petrol van.
recently i have been having coolant problems. It started when water would come out of radiator cap when the engine was hot, this ran concurrent with surging when the van was ticking over. I filled the radiator and this would solve the problem for a short while.
now i find the problem is far worse, or it seems it is to me.
The other day i pulled into a local garage for petrol and noticed water dripping from onderneath the van. On closer inspection i noticed it was coming from what appears to be a core plug? which i think is meant to blow out to prevent damage to engine if it freezes etc.
Now when i fill radiator, it immediatly comes out of the core plug, rendering the van undrivable at the moment.
One other point, i did notice that the reserve tanks water is still there??.how come??
Please could someone advise me if this problem is serious, and if not, what i can do to correct it.
Many thanks.

Simply replace the core plug, these are a white metal plug, which are an interference fit into the hole in the block.
Tap a sharp object into the middle of the core plug to punch a hole into it, being careful not to knock it into the engine block. Insert a screwdriver into it and lever it out, alternatively, screw a self tapping screw into it and pull it out with a good pair of mole grips.
Using a fine wet and dry paper, clean any rust or deposits from the hole, and fit the new core plug, using a hammer and a bit of wood, tap in gently.
