Looking to buy a YRV Turbo.........

Forum:

Hi All,

Looking to buy a YRV Turbo. As this will be the first time buying a Daihatsu, can anyone give me any tips what to look out for? Already looked at the reviews on parkers.co.uk. Although they don't rate the car that well, I thought I'd ask the people in the know.

Also what is the service intervals on the turbo? Am I right it's still 12,000 Miles or 12 months?

Looking at trading in my 2001 Ford Fiesta 1.6 Ghia. Which only has 101BHP! So hoping that the Daihatsu can tick all the boxes.

Thanks.

YRV

Hi,
no comparison to make with the Ford.
Read this previous post for info

Check out Dave Dixons Yellow Turbo in the For sale section, its one of the best! Only for sale cos he's caught the Scooby virus!!
Stay away from the high milage ones.
Any questions just ask!
Good luck in your search.

Cheers Dave. Had a read up

Cheers Dave. Had a read up on that link. Had heard about the exhaust pipes being made out of paper. And also the recall. I take it that you get something off Daihatsu if the anti-roll bars have been done?

Also noticed about the changing of the oil every 6,000 miles. Is this is part of the service interval?

Yep I would be interested in the car for sale. But I have to get rid of my Fiesta first. Yellow is a colour I wouldn't normally go for. But as these cars are as rare as Rocking Horse doo doo. And there ain't that many about.

Yep Scoobies are fun. Currently have a 03 STI impreza with PPP for the weekends. Got a few mods on it as to speak. Thus looking at the Daihatsu as a fun Turbo run-a-bout.

Hi jpor,

Daihatsu dont give you any proof that they changed the roll brackets, but it is recorded on their data base like all work done.
If you have the chassis number ask a dealers and they should tell you whats recorded.
I found my Turbo had 3 x central locking wire loom repairs, 2 x fuel senders, 1 x pedal rack bush and 1 x gear knob chrome cap.
Recently added to the list, battery, exhaust and roof strip!!
The exhausts are quite well made, its the weld on the add on twin tail pipes that let it down.
Daihatsu got a fabricators to do it, who have now gone bust, i wonder why?
Its 6000mls or 6 months for oil etc, although i only do a couple of thousand a year and use top spec full syntheytic oil, so its yearly for me.
Some Dealerships quote 5000mls in an attempt to reel us in early.
Services only work out expensive if you use the Dealerships.
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks for the info Dave.

Thanks for the info Dave. Just a couple of more questions Wink :

I take it these cars run better on something like Super Unleaded. I.e Shell V-Max?

What are the cars like for modding? I Curerntly have a SUR-Blitz filter I used to have on a classic shape Imprezza kicking around doing nothing Sad . Are these okay to fit to the YRV? Or like the Classic Impreza has a very delicate MAF sensor?

Cheers again for your time.

Jon.

Hi Jon,

yeah they run alot better on super unleaded 97ron.
I fill at sainsbury's, its supplied by BP, same stuff at the price of regular elsewhere Wink
Not much around for modding here in the UK but there is stuff out there somewhere, you just have to find it.
Japaneazicarparts does a few items including DSport and has overseas contacts.
I got some grooved discs from them and they are the right size 246mm.
Dave Dixon has a Blitz air intake on his, the one thats for sale, no problems that i know of.
I have heard the Blitz dump valve has to be set up correctly or it can?
Only mods i have done are, grooved front discs, chrome side repeaters, wider tyres, chrome hand brake button and double DIN size Cd player.

Dave.

Dave,

Thanks again on the advice. One more question (I Know hopefully my last Biggrin ). Does the YRV Turbo have discs all round? And how long do the brake pads and discs last?

Cheers, Jon.

YRV TURBO

Hi Jon,
ask as many questions as you like, thats what this forum is all about.
Only discs at the front for some strange reason, although the brakes seem adequate to me.
It does have ABS and EBD - electronic brake force distribution so should be rated as a very good braking system.
Its hard to say how long the pads and discs last, depends on driving style.
Mine lasted to 21,000mls, pads outlasted the discs just about!
All assuming the 15,000 mls on the clock when i bought it was genuine?
The original pads should have Hitachi stamped on them.
Was told by the dealership at the 3yr service that the brakes should have had a strip and lube done at 2yrs and not having that had caused scoring on the insides of the discs caused by the calliper sliders seizing.
Have you looked at the Turbo's on Autotrader online??
Regards,
Dave.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for answering. Yes I have had alook on the old Trader. Seen a Yellow one on there and have made enquiries. Hopefully will be able to go and have look at it this week.
Just looking for a good trade in on the Fiesta. And just wanted to get staright in my mind that going for a Daihatsu would be a better proposion than running my current Ford.

Am I right in thinking that the road tax should be cheaper on the YRV? Currently paying £165 a year on the 1.6 Fiesta.

Cheers, Jon.

Gears

Thanks again Dave. On the subject of gears. Is it true that the Auto box isn't that smooth? Or is that down to taste?

Also how do they fair for tyre life? And which tyres are recommended?

Don't worry I might have more questions yet Biggrin Just covering everything off. The way it's looking I am looking forward towards the test drive. Wink

Cheers,

Jon.

YRV TURBO

Hi Jon,
not had any experience with automatics before.
It changes smooth to me when in D4 auto mode.
I find the slight delay when you put your foot down a bit annoying at times, but it soon rockets straight after.
Put it in manual steer shift using the steering wheel buttons and its alot different, great fun!!
Still got the same tyres from when i bought it, done 6,000mls on them since - 195x50x15 Yoko A539's and think they had done 2 to 3,000mls before that.
Fronts still have a few mm before the wear indicators and the backs look half worn down.
The cars are light, under a 1000kgs and that means low tyre wear.
Make sure you test it in auto D4, lever drop to 3 and 2 and the steer shift buttons. You will see the differences.
Regards,
Dave.

Fuel Economy

Hi Dave,

Yes I have driven a couple of Autos in my time Smile . Although all the cars I have owned have been Manuals. Unfortunately all I have to go on is the reviews I have read on parkers.co.uk Sad . Therefore why I have joined this forum to get the actaul facts and the low down from actual owners Wink .

Fuel MPG on the turbo. Is the same for the other cars. 40MPG? Shok

Economy

Hi Jon,

again its down to driving style.
Its only a short hop to work everyday for me, so alot of my miles are on auto choke.
Never realy tried to work out the MPG but i would guess around 32-36 for me.
Have a look back on some previous postings there have been a few on this subject.
I would rate it as very good for fuel to power ratio, dont know of any other cars that match or beat it.

cheers,
Dave.

I think I'm out questions.....

Cheers for the helpful repsonses Dave Wink . I should now possess enough knowledge when I go and see one Biggrin . Just waiting on the local garage to get one in Sad . Rang them up last week, and the bloke who answered recons they should have one in stock this week Scratch one-s head . So hopefully come Saturday I will be able to test drive one Smile . Hopefully it will be better than a Suzuki Ignis Sport I once test drove. What a let down that was...... Shok

How to spot the rear Anti-roll bar issue....

Dave,

One more question. How do you know if the anti-roll bar has gone? I.e if the last owner hasn't had the car in for the recall and it has already snapped.

And yes, there maybe enough for a meet. But it will depend on which parts of the country we are all in.

Cheers,

Jon.

Roll Bar

Hi Jon,
will try to post a picture later in the image gallery.
You can easily see the roll bar brackets , pop your head under the rear. They are angle iron about 100mm in length, the roll bar is welded to these and runs along the suspension beam.
If they are broke it will probably knock on bumps and cornering.

Dave.

My anti roll bar brackets

My anti roll bar brackets are original as is the exhaust and I have had no problem with either.
If there is no recall I am happy that there is no problem.
Perhaps my car was not built on a friday!
Am actually going to clean it this weekend and put it up for sale!
But been saying that for a while!!
One thing I will say is it needs a turbo timer!
My Scooby has one and after a thrash down the M40 tonight it said over 3 minutes before switch off!
How many of you have waited more than a minute?
Dave.

Turbo Timers

Hi Dave,

Apparrently there have been issues with the anti-roll bar on the Turbo model not being strong enough, and owners having them replaced under warranty.

I have owned a couple scoobies. Currently still own a MY03 blobeye STi with PPP and a few mods etc... which I have pictures uploaded on scoobynet. If your referring to the classic shaped model, then the advice is to let the turbo cool down for a minute or to drive the car off boost for a mile or so before stopping. I still do this on my STi I use for the weekend.
