Change engine

Forum:

Does anyone know the best way to get the engine out of a Sirion? Does the Gearbox have to come as well? No manual seems to be available.

Thanks

Change Engine

Go to the top of the home page, press the service manuals tab, and purchase the YRV manual.

Ok it's not identical to the Sirion, but the layouts, engines and gearboxes are very, very similar.

At worst its a good place to start!

Ive never taken out a front

Ive never taken out a front wheel drive engine without taking the gearbox out with it. It generally comes down to the fact its more difficult (near impossible) to undo the bolts holding the bellhousing onto the engine block while its still in the engine bay.

Of course, i dont have a hoist, i work with jacks/cranes/etc.

As a rule of thumb, you work with the easiest stuff to get to which is connected to the engine. So start taking off all the wires, all the vaccumme lines and then get an oil tray down, take off all the oil feed lines, etc. After that take off the coolant lines, and at that point i wold suggest taking out the radiator from the engine bay (avoid damage when you crane out the engine). Have a look at anything else you can take off, then get underneath and undo the bolts holding the catalytic converter onto the exhaust manifold, or perhaps take off the manifold itself. Perhaps take off the intake manifold, or maybe just the throttle body. It depends at that point how it looks to you. If you think you can get your crane around it all and nothing is going to be pinched etc then may as well get the crane out and do it.

When the crane is secured around the engine, start pulling up the engine slightly, not alot just a little to ease the tension off the engine mounts. then take off all the mounts.

Ive forgotten to talk about how to get the driveshafts out of wheel hubs etc.. but you need to do that early on, as in somewhere between the very beginning of the job and after you take off the exhaust. Meaning: before you lift the engine, get the driveshafts out. I cant give you directions in how to do this exactly, but work with taking off the wheels, take off the brake rotors. get someone to hold the steering wheel straight. pop them out. Im sure im missing steps here mostly because im usually the guy inside the vehicle taking a break holding the steering wheel...
[edit]Oh there are some big mother nuts you have to take off with circlips or split pins. Take out the split pin/ciclip and get a 30mm ish socket and a big breaker bar. Like metre long or more breaker bar. Get someone to stomp on the brakes on the car. YOu need to take these off while the brakes are still attached to the engine... I know ive made a mess of this post and im sorry. Im sure these nuts hold on the wheel hub. You take off the brakes after this, take off the hub/rotor and have a look, at that point you push and pull your drive shaft out i think... this is the only part of the procedure i havnt done more then once.. and i did it blindly the first time..[/edit]

Back to the crane: Take the gearbox off while its on the crane, if you are by yourself, lower the crane so its nearly putting the engine on the ground, and make sure none of your crane straps need the gearbox to stay on for them to stay in place. loosen bolts to being only a few threads from falling out and when all of them are loosened, take them out while supporting the gearbox with your other hand. try to gently lower it to the ground. if you have it only an inch from the ground any way, you might be best to chock up some foam or a box or some wood so you dont have to support it with one arm while you are loosening bolts etc...

Ohwell thats my crash course to getting the engine separated from the gearbox and out of the engine... ill try to check in if you have further questions, its hard to recall everything you do when you are doing it. Its more a "oh this needs to come off so this can come off" and im sure you will get the hang of it Smile
