Forum:
so i was happily driving along in my L reg fourtrak independent 2.8tdi (bought 4 weeks ago for my landscaping company) this morning when i went to hold the steering wheel and caught the hi range 4x4 button, much crunching then i pulled to a stop, this evening went to work (tractor driving) pulled into the field and came to a halt with the rear wheels happily spinning. much swearing and gentle pushing with my 5 ton 4x4 160hp tractor and i persuaded my truck to leave the field.
so my question, what is broken and how much will it cost, be gentle as its my first fourtrak and i love it to bits!
cheers

Could be anything, on most 4x4's the transfer case explodes, a logical process needs to be followed.
Jack the vehicle off the ground and support on 4 sturdy axle stands, start the engine and engage 2WD and see if the rear propshaft is spinning, engage 4WD high and then see if the front propshaft is spinning.
If both turn, it will be in the axles, if neither propshafts turn, it will be the gearbox, or most likely the transfer case. Ob the rear of the transfer case is an aluminium cover, this looks like Madonna's bra, inclined at 45 degrees, remove the six studs that hold it, and remove it. Two shafts will be visible, the upper left is the input from the gearbox, if this turns when the engine is running and in gear, the gearbox is ok. The lower left shaft is the output shaft to the propellor shafts, if this does not turn, the problem is in the transfer case.
