1989 SPORTRACK CUTTING OUT

Forum:

Recently bought a 1989 Sportrack, 1.6 16valve petrol, 127K showing in good nick apart from it keeps cutting out. Starts first time, revs up ok but once on the road above about 35mph it will splutter, backfire and sometimes cut out but will start again straight away. There is a slight smell of fuel in the car (maybe unburnt fuel in exhaust from backfire). Have changed battery, distributor, dizzy cap, leads, rotor arm and coil but still no joy. Any help from you guys would be grately appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Sounds like the same

Hi,

Sounds like the same problem as mine on the thread below this one, "Carb problems on sporty"

The carb is faulty and is richening the mixture when cruising causing the symptoms you describe, I have been doing research and this seems quite a popular problem, I have checked every scapyard in the country via loads of those find a part services but no one has a carb so lets hope someone on here knows a way to fix it, I am going to take the carb apart on mine in the next few days so if I find anything I will report back on here...

To confirm this is the same as yours, try pumping the accelerator, accelerate for about 4 seconds then back of for 1 then back on for 4 etc, if you do this with mine you can get the car up to a fare speed but it just won't cruise.

Oh and if anyone on here has a spare carb remember I asked first......lol

Good luck

Pete

Thanks

Thanks Pete,
I'll give it a try and see what happens.
Ive listed the car on Autotrader now, £295 ono for spares or repair, but seems a shame cos its such a nice thing and drives really well.
I managed to get all the parts I swopped from my local breakers yard, they have one there, and the carb is still there too!!
I'm not going to do anything over the weekend, but if it sells I'll get you the carb from breakers yard, dont know how much it will be though. Let me know what part of the country your in and if your local to me you can collect.
Thanks again,
Simon.

Carb or injection Unknw sounds a bit like youve got some fettling to do with the throttle set up on it to get the fuel flow correct, but does sound like a typical over fuelling problem.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Its a carb model. I'm gonna try another carb on it tomorrow and see what happens.

CUTTING OUT

Have you checked the timing. This can also effect considerably the way the car both runs and performs unless correct.

cutting out

Thanks for that OLDMINIMAN. We have today changed the carb, no difference, the car was originally pinking so the timing has been altered accordingly and various settings have been tried throughout the scale of adjustment, mm's at a time and none of it has any effect.
To be homnest, it has no MOT and although its a very clean example (and solid underneath) the time has come for it to go to its death. Dont have the time or patience for it unfortunately. Also have a '96 Fiesta mk4, 1.3 endura engine, has absolutly NO power. Changed cat, all sensors, airflow meter, coil pack, lambda, battery, air filter, fuel filter and plugs.......anyone with any suggestions or ideas please comment. Tick over is fine, starts fine but as soon as its on the move it slows the more you accelerate. By the way, my local mechanic (Ford) has looked at it and also an auto electrician with no results!

cutting out

Shame, I had a Mini like that and the engine was just too warn to be tuned to run, tick over was fine. Again it met it's maker and a new engine sourced.. You will find a market for the bits or the non runner on Ebay.
