PROBABLY THE CAT. I HAVE IDENTICAL NOISES ON BOTH MY SPORTRAKS AND YES IT DISSAPPEARS AS YOU SAY ABOVE 2500.
One has been like it for 10 years and always gets through the MOT and though annoying having a later model with the same problem I know that the chance of the replacement cat I have in the garage being any different is remote.
Sometimes you can remove the protective pan from the bottom and that will shut it up, but it didn't on mine and it hasn't become worse, either that or age is dulling my ears.
