Forum:
hello, first time on the forum, hi. im looking for advice on what gear box will go into my n reg, 2.8, forester. i have been offered a gear box from a D reg fourtrack. i have been told that certain box's are non compatible, something to do with free wheeling hubs??? i have an electric shift in mine to go 4 high, well i did but my gear box was change 17 months back and the electric switch has not worked since. thought it might be loose connection, but the more i delve into these things, it could be a diffrent gear box fitted, i might have been ripped off. all i want is a sound gearbox at the right price just to keep on trucking. regards, a new member.[bronydd]
A Forister? Is that just
A Forister? Is that just another name (or modle type) for a Fourtrak? Presuming it is. All Fourtrak gearboxs are the same. Except the 2ltr Petrol has a slightly longer input shaft. This is interchangable anyway. The bell housing is also interchangable between Petrol and Diesel modles.
The transfur is basicly the same, but has diffrent gear ratios depending which modle it's from. Also some have a lever to change from 2H to 4 H to 2L. Others (later) have a dash mounted switch to go from 2H to 4H. Then the lever just does 4H to 4L. You can eisily put an earlier (all mecanical shift) box into a later car (with the dash switch shift). The dash switch will just become usles, as the transfure lever now does all the work.
The type of free wheeling hubs you have (auto or manuel) will not make any diffrnce to this situation, as they are a compleatly seperat entity, and either type of transfure will work with either type of FWH fitted.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
