propshaft problems

Forum:

Hi i have an f75 and i have just noticed a really a funny noise as i am driving its the same noise as if you tap the prop with somet metal, infact it sounds like a bolt being tossed about inside my rear prop as im driving. REally not sure if it needs a new prop or its the uj. can anyone help cheers stevo

uj

Hi, yep its probably your uj's, it sounds like a 'tink' type noise yes?, get underneath and turn the prop hard left and right(dont move the vehicle though) look at the joints while doing this, if they move the needle bearings inside are long gone, get new uj's from Milner off road, if you dont know how to do the joints your self then dont, cos if you get it slightly wrong boy will you know about it, your teeth will fall out when going along, if you take your prop off remember to paint marks at each joint for allignment when you put it back together because of ballancing. Smile

propshaft problems

cheers yes it is the tink type noise will it cause any major problems if i drive it till the parts get here or shall i bike it

its ok

It will possibly still survive a bit longer, go steady, put some grease in if you have any, when the new uj's are done, you want to grease them very regurlarly, it gets a lot of abuse when you think about it.

propshaft problems

cheers guys for your help. I took the rear prop off no problem and yes it was the rear uj, it was quite bad. Getting better at all this now thanks to everyone, so i think i will be able to get it back on cheers stevo

It depends on which uni it

It depends on which uni it is. If its the rear in the rear tailshaft, and it fails, it will simply fall out with a hell of a racket, and minimal damage. If its the front one that fails, it will drop to the ground, with even more racket, probably trash under the vehicle badly, wreck the tail shaft, and in the worst case, could dig in to the ground, trashing your rear axle, and at the very worst, cause a vehicle to flip.
Get it fixed pronto.
