Thinking of using veg oil.

Forum:

Now veg oil is tax free for car fuel (up to 2200 ltrs per year) or so I'm told. It could be worth reading the following link, if your thinking of just dumping some in your tank... http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/viewthread.php?tid=1553

HMMM

Hi, yep im interested in this mixing business too, but not done it yet, unsure as to what it will do to the engine, trouble is its also the wrong time of year cos its getting colder - oil doesnt like the cold, so just wondered how other people are getting on etc let us know please in detail, thanks

svo

okay have run veg oil or svo for over two years problems none apart for a slight leak from the fuel pump, flew through two mots with less than 0.25% on the smoke reader. engine doesnt knock and no loss of pulling power, just a spell of chips and strange looks in tescos carpaks when i fill the bugger up, in fact engine runs smoother using svo then it does with derv

vch takes a wee bit longer to start on veg oil or that could just be mine needing a new set of glow plugs but a can of eay-start works well with a big puff of smoke on start up but thats not there with i think its thugs birthday ad i give it neat derv

have run and do run 100% svo on long journeys and get about 23- 26 mpg on 500 plus mile jouneys just a pain in the arse having to carry that amount with me (must piss the people off at the services having to pick my empties outta the bins)get about 25-27 mpg on neat derv

winter 60% derv 40% svo no problems and thats in the northeast of scotland but to use 100% a fuel heater would be needed or a bigger can of easystart. joking apart every so often i chuck some injector cleaner down its neck and i will change the fuel filter when i get around to it.

i have heard of using white sprit at 1 ltr to 10 ltrs of oil to thin it a bit and to increase the bang a bit but thats a no no and if dipped that will cost you a fine.

one other thing, keep your receipts for the svo, customs can ask to see them, six years worth and if you go over 2500 ltrs you do have to pay the duty on it

used veg oil, okay you have to filter it before you use it i find a pair of the wives cast off thights and a 20 ltr can does the job. once the bits are out of it, pour it in the tank, away you go add nothing else, its works better than buying new and its free from the local chippy or hotel and of course keep a record of the amount used.

for the record svo will clen the inside of your tank, fuel lines etc and pull all the crap into the filter, so dont be a stupid as me and change the damn thing regularly. i have heard stories of it killing injector pumps but this hasnt happened to mine or to anyone i know you runs svo. i know mine has a leak but as svo isnt a fuel i cant be done for leaking it and it means i havent got to rewaxoil the underneath one last thing "ring gumming" try not to use 100% svo for short journeys and flush the engine before every oil change

veg oil

Hi
I use 50/50 New rapeseed oil (from the local supermarket)/ diesel and have not had any problems, summer or winter and have passed the MOT requirements, and at times have run a higher rapeseed oil mix, and with the rising cost of diesel will be looking to increase the veg oil proportion ,in relation to cost of veg oil to diesel. The only problem is getting rid of the empties, along with the strange looks as I pour in my fuel extender before topping up with diesel at pumps. (every little helps) Just carry a spare fuel filter, just in case, but in two years I have never had to change the fuel filter due to clogging , only at a normal service intervals. I use a engine flush at all normal engine oil changes and also change the oil filter, have my heater plugs checked yearly and replaced as required. ( 2 plugs in last 6 years of ownership). Have never had cause to use 'easy start' spray. Yes, there is more smoke on a cold start than with straight diesel, and yes, the 'chippy' smell, all livable with. I have only ever used New rapeseed oil, so cannot speak for the use of other veg oils,or recyled veg oil.

I have not yet read any posting on the net as to engine wear problems or injector/pump problems relating to indirect injection diesel engines,as fitted to Fourtraks, which use a mechanical rather than a electronic fuel system . I belive most anti veg oil comments are from people concerned with electronic/computer controled fuel management systems with direct injection and the fuel industry.
I have NO technical knowledge, just your average man in the Fourtrak

oily

hi, yep started today on the vegetarian diet, its a bit of a little test to start with, ihad a couple of gallons in the tank (diesal) already and i got a ten litre fuel can, i put exact 7 litres of diesal in and brought two litres of veg oil at 68p from aldi, mixed it thoroughly and put it in the tank, ok its very diluted, but i can just smell it in the exhaust so i know its burning without probs, so if its ok i think what i will do is always mix 7 litres of diesal in the can to 3 litres of oil and this will save 96p per two gallons approx (32p litre) so over a year thats a nice little saving - up yours mr Browny,;)

Rape seed oil

Hi,
I bought my fourtrak from Ayr in Scotland (A beautiful place),I do know a fair bit about the use of alternative fuels, especially Rape seed ,When I collected my car I filled the tank up with oil it was approx 70x30 mix and it came home perfect 269 miles,
I now use a vow2 heater from E bay off my other car and use 100% with no problem at all and the engine is not as noisy and at 60p a lt
hope this is of help to anyone ,any more help drop me an email
oily John

yes interesting

Hey mace, yep thanks for that thread on veggie stuff, i read it and have since made phone calls to various mechanics/agri mechanics that i know, one who also does trialling had no probs with using it, he knows of landys/range rovers who run 100% cacky chip oil for years, he also said you could run 50/50 no probs, but what i want to do is not a problem, i think the secret is to do a good premix, i use a ten litre can, 7litres diesal and 3 litres fresh new veg oil give it a good shake and it pours nice through a fine mesh filter, i save then 96p per 2 gallons approx over a year of 11,000 miles approx at 40mpg thats a nice little saving, at the end of the day fuel at the pumps is mixed with this stuff anyway and we are just making it more concentrated so if it was bad in the first place they wouldnt do it, also im talking about an old 1989 g reg dl51 engine with 169000 miles on the clock, secondhand fourtrack engines are plentiful when you look about, funnily ive got a spare dl50 with less miles on kickin about anyway, so i think its just down to the individual as to what they want to do and wether they are able to carry out repairs with ease etc, what is your opinion on the subject? have you had previous probs? or do you know anything about it etc? thanks again everyone Smile

Computer controlled diesel

Computer controlled diesel injection systems use the diesel itself to lubricate the injection components, as do mechanical systems; where they differ is in the ECU.
Electronically controlled systems have the capability; within limits, to control other parameters on the engine to ensure better combustion. fuel quality varies around the world, manufacturers build this compensation factor into the vehicles hardware and software, electronic adjustment of engine management ensures the optimum combustion for fuel of most qualities.
Veggie oils lack the quality, or capability, to lubricate the injection system adequately, as the manufacturers make components to meet the requirements of diesel.
Modern vehicles designed to run on bio fuels are engineered to ensure the fuel system is capable of using these fuels; predominantly, seals and gaskets, as these are the most prone to problems.

Not so cheap oil

Not ideal to run Daihatsu engines on; to run them it needs to be mixed with regular good quality diesel, several problems occur with many engines which are not direct injection, and controlled by the masses of microchips (no pun intended).

Combustion is the greatest problem, veggie oil does not completely burn, it leaves a residue within the combustion chamber, this forms carbon deposits and requires regular cleaning by chemical or other means (de-coking the engine). Heat on veggie oil leaves gumming in the combustion chamber and on other components such as pistons, piston rings, and valves.

Engine oil is not really suitable for use with veggie type fuels as it does not break down these deposits and suspend them in the oil, and filter them out adequately, synthetic oils are more suitable for these fuels, but are not really suitable for use in Daihatsu engines.

Duty is payable on veggie oils, currently; i believe it is 35p per litre in the UK, it is the responsibility of the vehicles owner to monitor and record the amount of veggie fuel used and pay the appropriate duty to HMR&C.

There are many more issues which would require me to write a book on the subject, but simply for those wanting to use it; follow the guidelines below.

Mix 20% veggie oil with regular premium brand diesel fuel, ensure it is properly filtered before putting it into your tank; use a propriety brand diesel cleaner with the fuel. Change your oil and filter more frequently, as well as your fuel filter; and be prepared for any cost savings to be eaten up with rebuilds of both engines and fuel systems.

Greyness

i think your right assassin, ive cleaned my engine of the stuff now, it ran nice, smooth etc no problems, nicer smell then diesal, only tried it as a bit of an experiment, i might still mix a bit here and there in the future, but it is to much of a grey area for my liking on the engine and on the pocket, no one really seems to know the facts its all word for word, if you got pulled over at one of those road side emmission tests what would happen? if your a foreigner- polish or something youll get away with it and have a free house and operation from the nhs thrown in, but the honest working brit who pays colossal taxes i bet we would get our butts kicked. So i dont know what to say, but i would like to know what it will do to my emmisions when the mot comes up soon, ill compare it to last years results. The facts are simple, do not

The facts are simple, do not do it unless the engine and fuel system are modified to run on the stuff, having researched, and undertaken extensive testing on behalf of several manufacturers, their advice is do not use it unless you are prepared for the expensive repairs. Major manufacturers cannot get it to work effectively without extensive modifications. Costs of producing engines to work with the stuff are exhorbitant, as they will not sell in adequate numbers to offset the extensive research, and modifications necessary. Other problems are the lack of any standards for the variety of vegetable oils available, manufacturers need a set of standards to design and build their engines too.
