Wheel options for YRV Turbo

Forum:

Hi All,

Currently have the standard stock 15" alloys on the YRV turbo. Considering looking at an upgraded set. Looking at trying to get a wider set, I.e 185 or 195 in 15" or 16", yet the bloke at the wheel centre I visted today who sorted out a puncher for me, informs me that getting wider wheels is illegal. Shok

Any recommendations?

Was considering getting some from Halfords. But there is talk about getting wheels with the right PCD. What is the PCD on the YRV? Help

Wheels

I had a set of chrome 16s on my YRV before I sold it. They are for sale on ebay at the moment. The PCD of them is 4x100x40 the tyres on those are 195/45/16. Hope this helps!

Thanks Lewie130.......

Thanks Lewie130. That does help. Out of a matter of interest. Did you have to use spacers on the hubs to get those to fit? Scratch one-s head

I take it that the PCD you have quoted, are a standard PCD found on most cars?

Was thinking about getting some alloys from Halfords, in black. Will these sort of, off the shelf alloys fit?

Thanks.

YRV

Its the J size (width in inches)of the rim that will cause problems - rubbing on the handbrake cable etc...
Think a 6J or 6.5J will fit best?

YRV

Lewie's wheels are nice, had my eye on them but just not got the money.
Daihatsu is a common PCD 4 x 100 its the centre bore thats not - 54.1mm. Luckily its small enough to have spigot rings to size them up. Never use without spigots, some do but it causes vibration that can lead to not just wear but the wheel coming off! :o
Got 195 x 15's tyres on my STD Turbo Alloys and are perfect regardless of what some say. Pic in the gallery.

All I am aware off when it comes to tyres are things such as: 195/55/R16

Hi Jon, The J of a wheel

Hi Jon,

The J of a wheel is the rim width in imperial inches from the outer rim lip to inner rim lip.
You will see Alloys advertised as 17 x 7j pcd 4 x100 etc.
Common J size wheels are 7j, the std Turbo rims are only 5J, so thats a big width increase and may cause problems. You can use spacers but this can affect the handling so beware.
Tyres are sized in metric millemetres - percentage - inches, ie- 195 x 45 x 15.
The 195 being the tyre width in MM's, the 45 is 45 percent of the width (in this case 195mm) which equals (87.75mm) the tyre wall height, the 15 being the more obvious 15 inch diameter of the wheel rim its going on.
Rim diameter + both wall heights equals the overall wheel diameter, you use this formula to get the right size diameter when choosing bigger or smaller wheels to retain the correct overall size so it does not affect the speedo readings. Bigger the tyre diameter from standard size = smaller the wall height profile to compensate, hence the word low profile tyres.
Offset is the difference between the actual centre of the rim width and how far left or right the wheel centre bolt hub is from this centre point. Most cars are negative offset where the hub mates up nearer the outside wheel face more than the inner wheel face.
A combination of J and offset make all the difference to not only the handling of the car but what might cause the wheel to rub or catch on things around it.
Does that make sense Scratch one-s head

Cheers, Dave.

Dave,

From what you are saying makes sense. Now have a better understanding to what to look for. Smile

Won't increasing the wheel

Won't increasing the wheel size throw the speedometer off track and make the readings in accurate?

Low profile tyre to the original

In answer to that question. Yes if you incresed the circumferance of the wheel but kept the same tyre depth. In most cases tyres come with a lower profile to componsate.

What I'm looking at is either keeping the same circumferance (15") but having a wider tyre. I.e at the moment I have 175 tyres on the stock rims. Looking at something a little wider for better grip. I.e a 185 or possibly a 195. Therefore this should'nt throw the speedometer off.
