Groaning Hijet

Forum:

My 1999 Hijet groans sometimes when the steering is turned manoevering slowly, doesn't seem to happen when driving at speed - sounds like a coil spring straining? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Groaning Hi Jet

check suspension bushes and also the steering rack bushes, maybe worn or needs replacement. Does the noise occur loaded or unloaded,

Hi! The bushes seem to be OK, with no clonks or anything. Will attempt to replace the shock absorbers at some point, the ride is bouncy, but getting them is another matter! I have already had a scary quote from the Main Dealer for a rear exhaust box...£240 odd...Thanks! HijetBear

Groaner Hijet

I sold mine, graons and all, to a mate. I used it this week, it still graons loaded or unloaded and has just sailed through yet another MOT.

As for the bouncy ride, all of these Micro vans suffer that problem, worse when empty. I had a Subaru Sumo and it was the same even with the engine at the rear. They are all superb vans but the benefit of the Sumo was it's 4 wheel drive. which made it more stable in the wind. Sadly these are no longer produced and the forward control type Micro's will all go if the Euro prats have their way.

Well, checked all the suspension and bushes, and all are fine, MOT guy said all was in good order and it flew through the MOT...used to it now, and that rusty exhaust box is still hanging on! Then it seems to weigh more than the van!

There you are quite normal because of it being forward control. I have a spare rack here in France if anyone needs one as I thought it was gone, 4 years ago because of the groans and some dick head told me it had too much movement. I suspect if Piaggio had strengtened the floor area at the front the grpaning would have been elliminated, but thats Piaggio for you and perhaps they should have stuck with scooters and Italian 3 wheel heaps.

Having ssaid that and groaning aside they are great little vans and altough I have now sold ,ime on I would buy another without hesitation.

I have heard that EEC are planning to ban new Forward Control vehicles, bloody bereaucrats and desk drivers!!!!! They want to ban some of the other crap produced like the AXIM cars that have a max speed of 30mph and are a menace, common here in France but now in the UK.

GROANER

I had a Hijet and had the same problem and found nothing. It sailed through the MOT and still graons and is still running.

I believe it is due to the forward control mechanism graoning under the strain of turning at low speed with the passenger weight directly on top. I did buy a replacement rack but never bothered to replace it as nothing was identified by the MOT. I also sprayed the rubber joints with a silicone rubber lubricant and protector with no improvement. I accepted it as a trait of the hijet although it was a bit odd. You are not the first on this forum to be concerned about this "GROAN"

Weight over the wheels?!!! Cheek! Thanks for that, have checked most things and it all seems Ok, MOT due soon, so I will keep you posted! May just have to live with it. Many thanks!

Hi, i have the same issue with mine too but after its warmed up and driving its ok. Mine likes to steer left when cold but once ive turned right afew times the steering is fine. Odd i know but maybe its just their way with these little vans!!!!! My fanbelt has started to screech alitttle now but again it goes when warm and its still charging/starting ok so im putting it down to all the snow weve had recently.

With my new 13 inch alloys fitted it now drives alot better and is more stable with the 165 wide tyres.

I also have a groaning girlfriend but i just ignore her aswell as the groaning van too and all seems well again!!!!

Regards. Brendan ( Zeebra 3)

i've not had groaning when i

i've not had groaning when i turn from standstill. i get a knocking sound only as i am turning the wheel. having a look at it this weekend.
