Can anyone tell me if the heater box/matrix housing (call it what you will) differs greatly from one year/ model to the next, ie would the heater housing from say an '89 fit on a '93?

Why worry? Take your old matrix to a radiator factory and get it copied. With some thinking about names [motor rad, radiators, radiator repairs etc] you should find them in yellow pages. Fitting a scapper is not worth the effort. They rot. Get it replaced for about £70.
