Hey all,
I've got 2 Fourtraks one is a C'reg 86 TD the other H'reg 90 TD both been brought for off-roading only and now the C'reg is the donor vehicle.
When we first brought the C'reg one, it had apparently fine brakes as a garage had checked them all out for the previous owner.
But as soon as we took it to a play-day and within about an hour the brakes became really spongy and you had to pump them to get them to work, plus the handbrake packed up.
Anyway, few months later we purchased the newer 1990 motor, both the LWB models, took her to a play site and within virtually the same time scale the same symptoms arose again with the brakes.
Have these motors got a weakness with the brakes, and any ideas how to overcome it, or is this simply co-incidence and bad luck?
Any info on how to repair our brakes would be highly useful so please fire away.
Cheers,
Shaun
I think they all suffer from
I think they all suffer from it, its simply a byproduct of the playing, mud in the rear drums. It packs in there nicely, nad doesnt come out again without a pull apart.
Just remove the drums, and hose out. Make sure your self adjusters are working, or get used to manually adjusting the rear drums.
Growing old is compulsary, growing up isnt.
MUD MAKES EXCELLENT TOOTHPASTE.
I use billion dollar satellites, to find Tupperware.

Finally got around to fixing
Finally got around to fixing the spongy brakes, but still cannot get rid of the spongy-ness.
I bled them with the aid of me mate 3-4 times starting from the rear near side wheel, lots of air came out both near side brakes, but with no avail.
The rears shoes are very very warn, could this be causing the brakes to be ineffective?
Is there a special sequence to bleed the Fourtrak's brakes?
Can anyone tell me how to adjust the rears up, I think we've disturbed the adjustment when we were hosing out and freeing them up?
Any help and suggestions most appreciated....
Cheers....
Shaun
Spongy Brakes
If the rear shoes are that worn then replace them. There is a limit that they will adjust to and then the distance between the Drum and shoe will be too great to provide effective braking with out excessive pedal movement which may be your spongyness. The drums should go back on tight rather than loose. They should turn of course but not slip on . Clean the aduster thoroughly before reassembly and then operate the hand brake to take up theslack. Allow the new shoes to bed in before going heavy on the brakes and new linings will feel spongy until bedded in for a good few miles.

Broken Brakes
This; i have seen several times before, it is air entering through the master cylinder, when vehicles have low levels of fluid in the reservoir, and they work at extreme angles or ascend or descend extremely steep hills.
The solution is simple, bleed the brakes and ensure the levels are up to the maximum level before extreme off roading.
We all use our vehicles beyond the angles specified by the manufacturer, as they are extremely capable of doing so, but we have to be aware of these things occuring.
look out no brakes!!!!
Im afraid there is bog all you can do apart from lots of maintanance to the rear drums, it is typical brake drum water mud scenario, they dont like foreign stuff in there with em, when i do events i take a can of cleaner spray with me and whip of the drums and clean em/reset them as they never self adjust, doesnt take many minutes to do this and will save embarassing moments(like me coming down backwards down a steep slope at a scary speed when it all went tits up cos of spongey brakes - hey ho live and learn) pehaps someone somewhere has done a rear disc brake conversion on a 4trak?dunno?
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
