Gearbox ratios & engine braking on Fourtrak's

Forum:

Out of curiosity would the ratios be different from a '86 TD LWB to a 1990 LWB TD?

Reason I say, is when we first used our '86 fourtrak, we could aim it a very very steep incline and put her in 1st gear low range and it would do such a controlled descent using lots of engine breaking.

The 1990 truck, would do the same incline but not as controlled, a little quicker and the engine breaking didnt feel as great.

If they are different, can we stick our '86 gearbox in our 1990 truck, or if its nothing to do with the gearbox's, what can we swap round or do to get the engine breaking in the 1990 truck as good as the '86 truck?

Cheers,

Shaun

As fare as I am aware they

As fare as I am aware they should be the same ratio. Their are diffrent ratio transfures, but they tend to be one ratio to each engine type (baring the pick ups, which have a lower ratio).
Had a thought. Is the later one the Intercooled version, as I belive that that modle is higher geared than the non intercooled terbo. This I hasen to add is just what I have been told, not something I had investigated myself. However my sources are in a position to know these things...
If you wanted to try it, they will certainly be interchangible, but I'm fairly certain this would not help.
Is the later car on larger diamiter tyres? Even this would make the gearing a little higher.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
