On my 2.8 tdx, when putting it into 4WD usual whirring sound as it goes in, but green light on dash is not coming on. Is there a simple cure for this or will it get expensive.

Is it actually in 4wd? If so, then it could be blown bulb, or broken or corroded wire at the sender.

Agree with Bundyrumandcoke, check the bulb and wiring, also check the actuation switch on the gearbox, these are located on the unit itself and easily tested or replaced.
