4wd ligh constantly on help please

Forum:

hi guys, hopefully someone can explain in an easy way what my problem is, the green four wheel light is constanly lit on my dash, my vehicle is a fourtrack fieldman tdl 1996 model, new to these so i have no idea what to look for, though i have had landrovers in the past, its driving no problems, no noises, drops into low 4wd without a problem when selected, purchased the vehicle yesterday privatly, i dont have a basic manual for it and the diagram thats on the drivers door is near rubbed out so i cant really make head nor tail of that, the chap i purchased it used it as it was no problem even on long trips, as a towing vehicle, the only fault he made me aware of was in low 4wd on full lock there is a slight clunking which i assume is the cv worn and hopefully can be attended to when the weather warms up, i`m a retired mechanic so it does not hold fears for me-just the current north east england weather and working outside does

thanks in advance

Stuck plunger?

Probably a simple fault with an electrical switch having its plunger stuck in the '4wheel' setting. Check along the 4wheel system from gear-stick to gearbox mechanical links - most likely beneath the floor.

Light of my life

Ensure the vehicle is actually not stuck in four wheel drive, the system is activated by vacuum and the switch is in the centre of the engagement mechanism.

This is located on the drivers side, at the FRONT of the transfer case, the solonoids are on the same side, but on a plate on the side of the gearbox. Pull off the wire, this should extinguish the light, if it does then the switch or the engagement mechanism is stuck or siezed due to dirt entering the system. Test between the switch terminal and earth, if there is a circuit then it is usually the switch, remove another from the gearbox, they are all the same, and substitute it, if the problem disappears it is the switch, if not, it is the four wheel drive is engaged.

Undo the cover bolts and remove, inside is a large diagphram, this gets clogged with debris, clean it out and ensure the diaghphram is not damaged, engage the four wheel drive manually to test it.
