update on my heating problem help needed

Forum:

i posted before about my sportrak getting hot, today i removed the pipe on the bottom of the rad and flushed it out and refilled it, it now runs a bit cooler but still hotter then i remember. the dial shows just over half way when driving, is that normal.

the only thing that has me stumped is the pipe from the bottom of the rad does not get hot is that normal all the other pipe are hot but just the one from the rad to the thermostat stays cold. can anyone have a look at theres after a run and see if its hot or cold.

Hi if the pipe from the

Hi if the pipe from the thermostate to radiator is cold after a run the likely cause is a stuck thermostate

temp guage

A healthy temp should place the needle to the left of centre and it shouldn't vary by much. In cold weather it may drop slightly more to the left and when towing up hill may move toward the cntre or just above.

As for the lower pipe staying cold, even allowing for the cooling of the RAD it should be cooler but not hugely. The rad may still have a block preventing the water from flowing through it and opening the thermostat or you could have an air lock in the system. if you take off the top and bottom hose and connect the hose pipe to the top hose does the water run out at the bottom of the engine? in effect flushing through the water jacket. Try it both way and the rad at the same tome to ensure that is is flowing freely. If it is on both tests and in both directions, the only other thing that comes to mind is that the water pump has failed and isn't pumping the water.

narrowing it down

If there was even a little flow through When you flushed the radiator I would expect the bottom pipe to get warm if does not it’s either the thermostat, an air lock in that section of pipe or the pump.

Follow the pipe from the bottom of the radiator to where it joins the engine loosen off the bolts that hold it with a few turns and wiggle it to break the seal (this is the thermostat housing) run the engine and look for the leaking fluid from the housing

If you have flow there isn,t an air lock and the pump is working fine and its the thermostat at fault.
If there is no flow it could be air locked so top up the radiator to move any air in the pipe, however if water now flows but stops when you stop topping the rad up its probably the water pump.

hi guys thanks again for the

hi guys thanks again for the tips, i have changed the thermostat and driven to work 2 times. the engine now runs alot colder. about 1/4 up the dial now. i just about to take it for a long run to see what happens as works not far from home. wish me luck ill let you know how i get on.

hopefully ill not be asking for more help on cooling when i get back.

Similar problem

I'm having a similar problem myself, the engine has recently started overheating but not consistently or for any one reason (i.e long drive/ ideling), i 've had the water pump and thermostat replaced but still its happening occasionally!?
Any suggestions??

i have just got back and the

i have just got back and the hottest it got was just under half that was after i got off the motorway.

cheers guys

as for the similar promblem to mine have you tried flushing out the rad incase its got a blockage in it.
