Forum:
Hi guys,
Last month the dreaded 3rd gear problem occured to my Fourtrack F78 whilest coming home from work  Now I am still using it but require a gearbox, as ive decided that will be the cheapest option as iam thinking of changing it anyway, so am looking for a second hand one on ebay.
Did find one with the electronic 4wd high which I was tempted on but dont want the hastle of wiring it up as i have read on this site that it is not the easist job to fit one, as a replacement for a manual 4wd high, and would prefer a manual version anyway.
However my question is which models have the same gearbox that will fit straight in no hastle? SO that i know what to look for.
Thanks in advance, DP
Is it the box
Before condeming the box, is it the rear mainshaft nut which needs tightening, this is a common problem.
Jack the vehicle at the rear, on the rear of the transfer case is an aluminium cover plate shaped similar to a bra, this is inclined at 45 degrees, remove this and check the tightness of the nut on the TOP shaft. If this is loose, tighten it with a 30mm ring spanner, as tightely as you can get it, peen the end of the nut into the groove on the shaft to prevent it from coming loose.
Thanks for the reply, no it
Thanks for the reply, no it is definatly the box, goes into all gears a dream, and no other problems.
Just when you put it into 3rd it knocks like hell, so ive either chipped a tooth or smashed one off me thinks.
Ive read in someone elses post that this can happen no im 99% sure thats it.
Ill give it a check tomorrow tho non the less.
Problem is I dont have to time to take the box off and strip it down to repair as i need the motor to go to work in.
With it being a Fourtrak TDL (F78) I assume that a box off a TDL would fit?
Thanks
You cant beat Diesel Power!
Any Fortrak box will fit.
Any Fortrak box will fit. As you say some have the electronic 4x4, but that is just a transfur thing, the box is the same. The F80/85 (Petrol) gearbox has a longer input shaft. It is interchanigable. The transfur boxes are diffrent ratios in diffrent modles. There are (I belive) 4 transfur ratios. Lowest to highest: F80/85, Diesel pick up, F70/75 2.8 normally asperated, F70/75 TD. I have heard the Intercooled 2.8TD is higher still. The transfurs are all interchaingable, unless your playing with a very old (F20/50) 4 speed gearbox.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
