Forum:
I own a 1985 Fourtrak (Rocky) - the nearside manual free wheeling hub has jammed halfway between Free and Locked, after having the vehicle in 4 wheel drive on a muddy field. I'm sure I correctly fully engaged the hubs before driving on the field.
What causes them to jam, and can I strip them and fix them? Or do I need to buy some new hubs. I do have the workshop manual on CD (the diagram isn't very good), but I would like further comments before preceding.
A mechanical engineer suggested that the splines may have been burred.
After leaving the field the vehicle was driven on the road in 2 wheel drive, with the hub stuck halfway, to get us home.
If you undo the 10mm bolts
If you undo the 10mm bolts (could be alen bolts on later model) around the outside of the lock / free twisty bit, you should be able to slide the workings out of the FWH. If the inerds are burd / damaged / jamed it could be a right strugel to get this out. Don't force it if at all poss, as there is a spring holding the outer part to the iner workings. You could twist the outer part so it comes off the spring, as it can be 'retreaded' once all the bits are out. If your going to replace the whole thing these bits need to come out first anyway.
It may just need these bits removed, cleaned and greased up. When putting back together have the twisty bit set to 'free'. The internal part will fit in 3 positions. Only one of these will allow the bolt holes to line up.
If you need to take the outer body of the FWH off you willhave to undo the 12mm bolts (again allen bolts on later modles) around the 'base' of the body. The FWH will now spin, but not come off (if everything is as should be). There is or should be a circlip around the end of the stub axle. It's normally buried in grease.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
