Sounds as if the bigends are on their way out. You may find it cheaper to source a complete unit from EBAY. There are a number being broken and unless you are competent at stripping and rebuilding an engine then the costs could be high to have it done. Of course you could buy a worse engine, that's a chance you need to weigh up and consider. I find the Private breakers on ebay better than those that are in the trade on price and standard. Because the Sportraks are so cheap you may even consider replacement of the car with a newer model and breaking that one for selling as spares on ebay and keeping a newer one going.

Knocking Shop
Sounds like the big ends, or mains, whip out the crankshaft, have it reground and replace the bearings, should cure it.
