Battery voltage

Forum:

What should the battery voltage read when charging? Mine is reading 14.5v and the charging light started flashing this morning. Is this a dodgy regulator or worn alternator? I changed both the battery and regulator last year so I'd be suprised if it's gone already!

Forget the battery voltage gauge, these can become notoriously inaccurate, test the output by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals with a voltmeter.

Measure the battery voltage before starting the vehicle, this will give you a reference point; start the vehicle and rev it to 2000 RPM, measure the voltage again. Finally, turn everything electrical on, rear screen heater, headlights on full beam, demister on full, etc, and measure the voltage again.

Voltage should rise each test, if it rises above 14.4v it could be the regulator, or faulty (corroded usually) wiring.

For a definitive test go to a local auto electrician, they have all the necessary equipment for testing properly.
