I have owned the car from new (1997:66000 miles) and this is the first problem I have had! The other day it started then cut out straight away. It kept starting but kept cutting out as soon as it started. The engine icon was also illuminated on the dashboard. The following day it was fine but I have lost faith in it now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like you may of had an engine management problem. The only thing that can sort this out is to take it to a dealer and get them to put it on a machine they have to diagnostics (I think I was quoted about £40 for it)
The problem may have been caused by water in the fuel or some other engine dirst which has since gone but best to get it checked I would say.
