seems to run on 3 cylinders then 4 cylinders then 3 .
i have changed,
plugs,
rotor arm.
distributor cap and leads.
air filter.
even pulled the carb apart,
does anybody have any idea what it might be.

many thanks.

Contact breakers.

Did you look for any contact breakers and condenser in the distributor? Might need replacing. Gap 1mm. Perhaps you have electronic ????

bad starting

I think I am correct in thinking that the G reg would be a Carb version, normal aspiration. Check that the choke is shutting off completely. I'm not that familier with the Carb model but I know that ifthe mixture is too rich due to the choke remaining on that the car will run lumpy. A lot of Auto chokes tend to stick on and often manual choke cables can be adjusted incorrectly allowing the choke flap to remain partly closed enriching the mixture. You seem tohave donemost things and yes the gaps on both the plugs and particularly the points will cause the problem you are having. Also if you have changed the points, assuming a non electroic set up then check the timing. If the car is an injection then you can ignore alot of the above.

Sorry not to be more definite

Choked

Agree with Oldminiman with his comments on the choke, two versions were available, auto chokes and manual chokes, if you have an automatic choke it could be a coil problem.
Auto chokes have a coil spring inside them which operates the choke, this is temperature dependent, the coil springs have a tendency to stretch slightly with age, this means the choke does not completely come off. Other problems with these units are accumulation of dirt inside the coil spring housing, particularly on vehicles spending a lot of time off road, or in dusty climates, this is a simple remove and clean repair.

thanks for all your comments.
cleaned the choke housing and used REDEX petrol treatment
straight down the carb at high revs,
now all works perfect,
doing a clutch replacement now at home.
