I've bought a Fourtrack!

Forum:

Hi, new to the forum and as it says above - I've bought a fourtrack. Smile It's a 1990 EL 2.8 Turbo diesel and everything works fine - as far as I can tell so far. I had plenty of opportunity on the long drive home to see how well it ran and how noisy it gets (Very!)

I'm looking more towards sorting out any body and chassis issues first of all and was hoping some of you good folks on here could tell me what the most common areas are for rust and how easy these are to repair - I can weld either gas or whatever so no great fears there.

Also, what is the best DIY thing to treat the chassis and underbody with so that it resists the rust for longer?

Sorry if these are all old questions to some of you folks - but we all have to start somewhere.

Nice site Wink

The common rust areas on the body are the rear arches and the rear floor joints with the arches.

Obviously the Chassis and it's cross members also attract a bit near the spring hangers and the cross tubes and if this exists then before treatment they need to be sorted.

For treatment I have used normal WQAXOYL both inside the chassis and on the outside and rear wheel arches. The insides I spray every 2 - 3 years and the outside I tend to do on an anuual to 18 month basis. If I see a problem then I do it between.

Daihatsu in their early days were quite generous with their panel protection but time does allow this stuff to dry out so again waxoyl in the normal cavity areas, doors etc will do no damage.

I tend to use a good undeseal annually beneath the rear arches as the normal black waxoyl dissappears with washing and water spray.

The cheapest place to buy it I have found is a farmers supply shop, in the west it was Mole Valley Farmers but most areas have these outlets and instead of a car being on the 5 ltr tin it has a tractor, same stuff but usually cheaper.

Thanks

Hi Oldminiman, thanks for your reply to my queries. The car I've bought has already had some remedial welding/plating done to the rear offside wheelarch, it aint pretty but it seems to be okay for the present - I'll tackle this and tidy it up at a later date. I'll try our local farmers shop and see if they have anything like what you suggest. Do you know if anyone does replacement panels such as the rear wheelarch or even repair panels to suit?

Much obliged
