YRV Turbo Any good?

Forum:

Hi All
I'm new to the forum and I'm thinking or buying a YRV. Not sure to go for a Turbo or a standard F-speed. We need an auto as the wife is a bit lazy at changing gears, any advise would be great. I have heard of a few faults with auto transmissions not selecting gears and ATF oil leaking into coolant radiator didn't know if these were unusual one off cars? We had a 1989 Charade 1.3 auto (G102) about ten years ago and it was a super car, so ever since our cars have Jap or Korean. Looking foward to your replies Cheers Marcus Smile

I personally would recommend

I personally would recommend the Turbo version if you can get your hands on one. They are great fun cars to drive, I have only noticed my AT box not selecting gear a couple of times after it being stood a couple of days and its been cold and damp, so just put it down to damp getting into the sensor as its been spot on rest of the time. Only real problems to be aware of that I have heard about which have been mentioned on the site a number of times before is the rear roll bar on some are prone to snapping, and the factory fit exhaust isn't particularly well made. However on most the Turbos in circulation, these have generally been sorted, as the exhausts have fell apart on most of them by now I would of thought Smile

I would also recommend the

I would also recommend the Turbo, and having owned and driven both, the F - Speed is nowhere near as much fun!

Its softer and more economical, we regularly got around 45mpg with the F - Speed and I get around 40mpg with the Turbo if I can it drive sensibly! The F - Speed if prone to understeer and roll on corners.

The Turbo eats exhausts and has different front brakes from the F - Speed. Its pretty cheap to run for the performance it offers though.

So get the Turbo and have a S/S exhaust made when the original system goes (I paid just under £300 for this recently) get a (rare) sports air filter or induction kit and enjoy the induction hiss and wastegate whoosh. Brilliant Fun! Smile

The servicing at my local dealer (Ardneil of Troon - 120 miles away!) is cheap (48,000 miles service for £120 including new spark plugs and fresh auto box fluid at my request!).

The interior in mine is a bit rattly which has been improved by placing pipe lagging foam over the door handle mechanism rods and generally tightening things up!

Reliability has been 100%

Go for it!

It's very good

Yep it's better to get a turbo especially with an autobox. I had my turbo in at the garage to sort out the leak it had (turned out to be a badly replaced windscreen) and had a hyundai 1.1 Auto as a lender. Put it this way I was glad when I got my YRV back.

Apart from what LURCH has said, you shouldn't have any other problems. Although the MPG figures for the Turbo are no where near what you'd get. For example you will get roughly 200miles to a full tank of petrol. And don't expect the YRV to corner at speed too well, unless it's had a lowering kit fitted and wider wheels. The only other niggle I have had are the following:

Eleccy door mirrors are not heated ones, so therefore on cold frosty mornings make sure you get the frost off the mirrors.

The tryes are only 175/50/R15. Can cause wheel spins to occur when pulling out of junctions too quickly.

My original stereo decided to eat a CD and therefore ended up buying a replacement CD player.

Had a water leek, but turned out the orignal windscreen had been replaced incorrectly.

Going over speed bumps, especially the very small raised ones is a painful experience.

But don't let the above deter you, they are a good car, yet very hard to get hold of one. Took me close to over a year before one popped up for sale close to where I live. Also something to note, the service intervals on the turbo are every 6 months and not every year.

Can't really say how the F-speed will compare. Although I have notice that the F-speed can sometimes be up for sale close or over the asking price that a Turbo is being sold for.
