PTO winch actuation cable.

Forum:

Daihatsu pulled out of Oz a few years ago. Toyota now supplies a limited number of genuine new parts to the market. I have got looks of disbelief and puzzlement when approaching Toyota parts places with my problem.

So, with Daihatsu having lasted a lot longer in the UK than here, I am asking for assistance to try to track down a new actuation cable for a Daihatsu PTO winch to suit an F75, but all the early ones should be the same.

Its the one with the knob on the floor, beside the handbrake, that you pull to engage the PTO winch, and push to disengage it.

If I cant find one, I may have to adapt one from another brand, or see if I can get one custom made. My existing one has already been rebuilt, using stainless steel yachting rigging as an inner cable. Works fine to engage it, but I have to climb under the vehicle to manually disengage it.

It was used last night in anger, recovering a 100 series Landcruiser stuck to the sills (used a 3-1 pull, 2 snatch blocks) and a less bogged Nissan Navara.

On The Pull

What i do with these cables is to replace them completely; many models of 4X4 suffer with this particular problem when they are cable actuated.

Use ball joints off gear selector mechanisms of front wheel drive models, these can be obtained with the the rod with two sockets fitted. Adapt the winch end and fit one ball joint, do the same at the lever end; make a lever if necessary, shorten the rod bu cutting out the middle section and weld back together to get the desired length.
This system gives a positive engagement, and a positive disengagement, you will not have to crawl under the vehicle again except to grease the ball ends periodically.
