4wd engaged at 40mph, ouch

Forum:

hi all

i was driving along and accindently hit the dash 4x4 high switch while on the road, i no longer have any signs of 4x4. this happened about 2000 miles ago or 3 months.

the truck now makes a grinding noise which seems to come from the front wheels, its not constant, and only seems to happen under a medium amount of power, flat out it stops and doesnt happen when slowing

any ideas ??

cheers

ouch nasty

Yet another win/plus point for having the old manual locking hubs!! which i fear you will now be fitting due to cost of new auto ones and because they are totally destroyed inside, also once you have stripped the hubs to find out what you have done you may also be replacing the driveshafts due to lack of spline metal on the ends - just a thought, probably a silly idea to keep on driving the thing after this accident occured as more chewing and gouging can occur - whoops, a possible nice lot of filings may also be heading towards the wheel bearings to add insult to injury, nevermind it can all be fixed!! Smile

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

cheers for the reply

to be honest the financial implications of pulling the truck off the road would be harder to stomach than repairs,

do the manual hubs just fit onto the same fixing as the autos??

how do i tell they are wrecked?

cheers

try

try a few things to investigate the damage, put in 4x4 so you can start to ellimanate probs, jack up front wheel then other, try to turn tyres, youll see if front prop moves/ spins this will tell you if hubs have gone etc, manuals hubs bolt straight on, basically 4x4 on the front works like this - transfer box output to prop shaft, to differential, to diveshafts (inc fixed cv joints)to hub locking unit, to wheel hub, using this as a guide you can work along to diagnose what might have gone, hopefully not much, without seeing it i dont know the damage so if your not sure yourself try to locate someone who would know.
