Introduction - My 2.8D and 2.8TD Rocky's

Forum:

Greetings everyone - this is my first post on the group - I am Portuguese, 28 years old and recently purchased my 2nd Rocky.

I own two Rocky's - one of them came originally from Switzerland and it's a 88 2.8D F75 5-seater ("closed metal body") - even though it is clearly a rust bucket it does a superb job negotiating the steep hills and dirt roads in off-road - which is its main usage - I do at most, 1000km in it per year, and I'm always astonished to find it starts flawlessly on the 1st try, every time - even though I leave him in the garage for periods of up to two months.

Everything* in this one is working except:
-Rear washer fluid jet;
-Hot air (the passenger heater works fine in either temperature though);

* - take this everything with a grain of salt though... Wink

This vehicle isn't fitted with a muffler - just a straight tube from the admission, which probably makes it the noisiest Rocky ever (I'm pretty sure you guys can hear me accelerating over in the UK ;-)). It also doesn't leak oil from the engine - it does however leak oil from the rear differential and recently the tank as started leaking diesel too - I'll have to check the latter, as the differential is missing some kind of o-ring - or at least that's what I have been told.

My 2nd Rocky, which I purchased last week is also an 88 F75 5-seater, but this one has the 2.8TD engine and the hard top body. Unlike my other Rocky this one has the voltmeter/inclinometer/clock extra and the 4H button - which thankfully seems to engage the 4WD (pheew - glad *that* works). It has however a rather severe oil leak coming from behind the engine (what can be this due to?) When I was testing the 4WD I broke the accelerator support so I had to crawl to the mechanic, where the vehicle is waiting inspection, on the leak and on the accelerator: tomorrow he'll call me with news... I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

I have some problems which I'll post in the proper section. Thanks in advance for any help!

On a curious side note it is perhaps worth mentioning that the first Daihatsu off-road sold in Portugal was the smaller Feroza - even though we did have the early Bertone's which resemble the F75's we never had the larger Rocky/Fourtrak.

Hello
When you say, for your first Rocky, its "closed metal body" do you mean an all steel roof, and is it shorter than your other Rocky. Does your second Rocky have a raised rear roof section, made out of resin. If so, then your first Rocky is actually an F70.
Now to your peoblems. First Rocky, where is it leaking from the diff exactly. If its the front, where the tailshaft goes in, there is an oil seal there, that gets flogged out by a loose bearing, or contamination from mud/dirt/grass, ect. If the leak is from the back inspection cover, then remove the cover, and put a heap of gasket goo on the gasket. If its from behind a rear wheel, a rear wheel bearing is stuffed.
As for the leaking diesel, if its dripping from the tank, then is a design flaw in the Rockys. Dirt/mud/dust gets caught above the tank lip, between the tank and the chassis cross members that support the tank. When it gets wet, it stays wet, and rusts out the tank from the outside. Its more common on the front side of the tank. Remedy, remove the tank (5 bolts, plus the hoses, and the sender unit wires) clean up the from of the tank and be shocked how bad it is, remove ALL paint and rust- its got to be spotless, then solder a large patch across the affected area. Its a diesel tank- it wont explode. (For the uninitiated, DONT DO THIS IF ITS A PETROL TANK) Then paint the tank in an anti rust compound, and reinstall. Or replace the tank, checking for the same problem in the new one.

For the second Rocky, I wouold suggest the oil leak is either, rear main seal, or front seal of gearbox. Does the leaking oil smell like oil, or does it stink like crazy. If the former, then engine, if the latter, then gearbox.

Cheers
Bundy

Quite right! My 2.8D has a nice continuous roof - which I prefer to the resin (quite right again!) raised one on the F75 - and I believe it is shorter, yes, because there's no way I can fit in a spare wheel horizontally behind the back seat as I have one on the F75.

So it's a F70 and a F75. Got it, thanks!

On the F70:

I believe the leak is in the front, where the tailshaft goes in - I had it checked because I was afraid the oil would eventually empty out - the mechanic just told me it'd be the seal/ring that needed replacement and filled the oil back up to its level. I'll take care of this problem when I repair the tank.

The F75:

The mechanic didn't call me today so I went for a visit: he still didn't have time to begin working on the car but the accelerator should be an easy fix - the support broke and needs to be soldered. The oil smells like oil - although with a strong tint of burn - Blush - perhaps it's gearbox?

I had a similar problem with the diesel tank on my 1988 F77 lwb pick up - it started oozing diesel from all surfaces while at the cropredy festival one year - emptied the tank over three days.
Replacement fuel tank (new) was cheap enough and easy to fit. no problems since.

hope you get all the niggles fixed as the rockies are very reliable motors - seem to keep going forever.
