A good quality mineral rather than synthetic. either 15/40 or if high miles a 20/50. Duckhams or Castrol Oils rather than Tesco or the like.

Thanks for the quick reply!
what would you consider high miles
My 4trak's done nearly 120k
15/40 or 20/50 ??
Oil
I would go for a 20/50 Diesel type oil but there is more detailed advice on the forum since I wrote which you may want to consider. I wouldn't go to too thinner oil but that is just my opinion. I have tried synthetic 10/40 on my Sportrak, petrol, and was not that pleased and replaced it. It became hotter and noisier.

oil
120k bah tis not even run in yet, as for oil i was going to post "light brown stuff" but i used smei-synthetic 10w40 in mine, no problem
sorry am in one of "those" moods
OIL
If the chap knew the history of the 120K then I would agree that for a diesel it is barely run in, but I have assumed that he is unaware of the history and I would play on the safe side and go for a good quality lubricant with a bit more viscosity. The semi synthetics are fine as you say and I do use them on newer Mini's but the full synthetics are best left to the new cars that were built with those oils in mind. I shouldn't worry about moods Antraxx69 we all have them and some of the things people write in about make them worse. (No reference to this item meant or intended).
Good Luck

none taken OLDMIMIMAN
best advice would be to get the best you can afford in both oil and filters always! oh and change the damn cam belt (yes i know moan, moan, whinge, but you know it makes sense)
oil
my mate put some special oil from halfords designed for engine that have done over 100,000 miles.
i dnt know if it is ok for diesles as this was going into a petrol
but whats the difference
all mine run on 15w/30
lol
Duckhams 15W 40 diesel
My F73 has done over 130000 miles on the above since new .... tick tock all the way.
Change oil and filter every 4000 miles.
I get my filters from a motor factors for the princely sum of £1.60 + VAT, so I don't mind changeing them every time. You might push the interval to 8000 miles for the filter, but it's very titchy for a big diesel, so I wouldn't advise it.
Daihatsu Service manual for
Daihatsu Service manual for F70, F75, F77 states:
engine:
DL-42 (non turbo diesel) API CC or CD.
DL-52 (turbo diesel) API CD.
Oil change:
Normal use: 3000miles
Severe use: 1500miles (very cold / short trips / dusty / towing).
Filter change:
Normal use: 6000miles (NOTE different mileage wrt oil change!)
Severe use: 1500miles
The cheap supermarket oils (Lidl, Aldi, Tesco etc) all seem to exceed the CD spec.
I have some cheap oil from a local parts suppler that is only CC rated, but as I don't have a turbo.....
Viscosity (SAE):
<10deg C: 5W-30
-18deg C to > 38deg C: 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50.
-12deg C to > 38deg C: 15W-40, 20W-40, 20W-50.

Word of Warning
Stick with a good mineral 10/40 or 15/40 oil, DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC OIL, many people are under the illusion that this is the stuff to use; it is not in a Fourtrak engine.
Synthetic oils are designed for use in modern engines with far tighter internal clearances than older Fourtrak engines.
Semi synthetic oils are ok as they are an inbetween oil, they will keep your engine internally cleaner, and are better at handling contamination from damp ingress, and also dust.
As for engine life, I have seen many of these engines do in excess of 500,000 miles, despite being worked hard; they have been regularly maintained, and most importantly; had their oil and filter changed regularly.
