Forum:
hi, newbie here. have a '00 fourtrak 2.8 turbo intercooler TDL long wheel base. i was doing a bit of work in the engine compartment which ment removing the air box assembly. while i had it off, i checked out the condition of pipes & wiring etc and was shocked to find that the vacuum pipe that goes from the back of the altinator to the steel pipe on the firewall was touching one of the metal brackets at the base of the airbox. i took off the pipe and under inspection the pipe had worn away quite abit. the outer layer of rubber and the chord in the middle of the wall had been worn away leaving only the inner rubber layer intact.
this as far as i can see must be a design flaw because these pipes had never been moved or disturbed since we bought it new. it is now approx 7 years old now and i think that anyone with a '00 fourtrak should check this pipe for damage.
i appolagise if this has allready been covered elsewhere on the site but i thought it would be worth mentioning.
Nope .... that's a new one.
Thanks for the info.
I'll have a gander at mine, but since all my vehicles are older, it should have gone through by now.
I suspect that the guy building/working on your vehicle wasn't thinking when the pipe was installed/refitted.
BTW, if the pipe is worn through, you will lose all brake servo assist and the vacuum operated 4wd shift on the 'electric' transfer box (Gawd, how I hate those things ! )

yeah thats what i thought, on our model it doesn't have vacuum operated 4wd shift, its just has the lever that selects 2wd high, 4wd high, neutral and 4wd low

Interesting !!!!!!!. I shall have a look at mine, as a few weeks ago hitting the dash button in 4H did not get the response I was looking for, but I got it when engaging 4 L , blamed it on having A/T tyres and a to high gearing (H) . (manual hubs were engaged). No problems though with brake servo operation.

Piping Hot
Yes, seen this one a few times, following investigations the conclusions are as follows.
Most models were fitted with a shaped pipe, this was to prevent chafing of the pipe; however, on some models this was changed by the supplying dealer due to some forthcoming regulations which never transpired.
Dealers who were aware of the proposed legislation were overzealous and replaced the pipe as a matter of course, they used a non shaped pipe to replace it.
