Hi there,
just short of easter I seem to be running out of luck.My Fourtrak TD suddenly started behaving badly during cold starts.Very low idle revs and lots of blue smoke from the juddering engine but then after a few seconds and a little help on the throttle the engine stops smoking and the revs nearly return back to normal...It does really sound like the engine initially gets starved of Diesel. Is it time for a new engine or is there an easier way of rectifing this problem?
Cheers folks
Initial thoughts
Before you commit the engine to the grave, my initial thoughts would be to check one or more glow plugs (they do burn out).
I'd do this by checking the continuity of each one - according to the workshop manual each one should be about 0.1ohm.

bad starter
as above, check and replace as required the heater/glow plugs first, poss heater plug relay. info on site if you search for it.

Glowing
First check the glowplugs, one or more may have burned out, or they may have all deteriorated with age and use, also check that they are the correct voltage. Fourtraks use either a 7 volt or 7.5 volt glow plug, i have seen 7.5 volters replaced with 7 volters by mistake.
Check the non return valve in the fuel filter, these sometimes go and allow the fuel to drain back to tank, the vehicle uses the fuel in the filter to start and run, and has to suck fuel from the tank, this takes time and gives these symptoms. This is assuming the filter is regularly changed and is in good condition, also drain the water trap off under the filter, if the seperated water is too high it will be sucked into the engine with the fuel and give similar symptoms.
