2.8 TURBO DIESEL SMOKEY AND REVS UP RIGHT OF THE CLOCK

Forum:

1991 2.8 Turbo Diesel, Was Fine Until Last Mot, Since It came back, somtimes it smokes like a pig, infact most of the time, then other times its not to bad, but more and more the engine revs up to full bore...rev counter bouncing of the other other side of scale, somtimes it will stay like this for several minuits then go back to idle, other times i have to turn off the ign switch, the smoke is not black nor is it white, its like a grey with a hint of blue, but it has a very strange sort of diesely fuel smell like the old type kerosene greenhouse heaters, is my injecter pump on its way out,or could it be a turbo / injecter pump combination fault im at a loss, the vaccum pipe from the turbo inlet manifold to the injector pump was split and it was rather oily on top of the vaccum unit where it had split i replaced the pipe but no improvement in fact the reving up to full has gone worse......anybody got any ideas....before i decide to sell the damm thing for spars or repair.

chris...

It sounds like the turbo, it'

It sounds like the turbo, it's probably got a fuel leak going into it and cuasing the over revving.

Has your oil level gone down?

Has your oil level gone down? As deisles can somtimes (when the bors get worn) pick up & run on their own oil. This dosn't sound like what yours is doing, as this normaly cuses the engine to rev uncontrolibly until it runs out of oil. Then it goes bang. Turning the ignition off has NO effect, as it's not runing on deisle. You'd have to stall it, to stop it. As I said dosn't sound like what's happening to yours, but check your oil anyway. If the bors are badly worn you may find the level is OK, but that there is deisle rather than oil (or a mixture of both) in the sump.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

THANKS NEV.K &CHARADE MATT & frank & everybody

To be honest it is very low on oil, i have only had the vheicle a week, i bought it of a friend of mine for very little money, as i know the test is comming up, its been like this for about 8 months, but its only been used for about 3 months since the last test, so i thought ok, right price so i will see if i can get it right, but its not going back on the road untill i can get it running right "well at least so it will pass the emmitions test, thanks to everyone, im new to the japanese 4x4 diesel market, so any info that i can get i very valuble to me, as at the moment i havent got a everlasting pot of gold, so i need to do as much as possable on it myself, strange but it starts as soon as the key is flicked into the start position, i wish my alfa would start this quick, butim in no hurry, ive got some welding to do on it yet, dont know if its common but one of the rear sliding windows has rotted on the seals, hence water has rotted part of the rear wheel arch and where it meets the floor pan, can you buy relacement wheel arches or is it just a weld up job,

cheers everybody,
chrisac

over revving

sounds like the same problem i had with mine .if it is you will find your turbos had it . the turbo wears and allows oil through .the engine is then running on oil .if not fixed the engine will rev until it goes bang. i would change the turbo very soon

over reving .

thanks for that greg, i managed to find time today to have a look,
ive nearly got the turbo off, but from what i have seen so far i would say your right, the intake side of the turbo is full of black oil, i can move the turbo impeler shaft side to side about qaurter of an inch and the sump is empty, so its a dam good flush out, new oil and filter, and new turbo of course, and hopefully there will be no damage to the engine bottom end

cheers,

chrisac.
