Stick with a good mineral 10/40 or 15/40 oil, DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC OIL, many people are under the illusion that this is the stuff to use; it is not in a Fourtrak engine.
Synthetic oils are designed for use in modern engines with far tighter internal clearances than older Fourtrak engines.
Semi synthetic oils are ok as they are an inbetween oil, they will keep your engine internally cleaner, and are better at handling contamination from damp ingress, and also dust.
As for engine life, I have seen many of these engines do in excess of 500,000 miles, despite being worked hard; they have been regularly maintained, and most importantly; had their oil and filter changed regularly.

I agree entirely, a good quality Mineral or semi synthetic oil is best for both the Fourtrak and the Sportrak and certainly not 100% Synthetic. The grade is upto uyou but 10:40 or 15:40 would be best and if high mileage I would even use 20:50 if you can still get the stuff. An oil made specifically for diesels is best and change it regular along with the filter.
