Fourtrak F78 Squeal / Chirping above 2500rpm under load

Forum:

Hi all,

Got a slight problem with my fourtrak 2.8TD (F78).

It's a kind of intermittent squealing or chirping sound, most noticeable at above 2500 rpm in fifth gear (around 60mph), certainly sounds like it's coming from the engine.

It doesn't happen when in neutral at any rpm, which means it's a bit harder to track down!

It sounds like possibly a belt, although i've inspected the belts visually and they seem OK. I guess it could also be a bearing?

Any ideas as to what it might be or how I can narrow it down?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Lube

Belt Up

Usually it is one of the drive belts when it is under load, or the pulleys are shiny and slippery. Remove the belts and roughen up the pulleys with wet and dry paper, this gives them some grip, also check for contamination of the belts from oil.

Other possibilities are the power steering pump beginning to go, or the cam belt or its idler bearings wearing; alternator bearings give this noise, as do wearing water pumps.
