noise

From what area, front axle or rear.

Could be front axle steering stops or wheel bearings or rear axle bearings, damaged suspension components, bushes, shocks ,ect.

Try the steering stops

Try the steering stops first. The bang/knock with the steering is on full lock and you go up or down a bump. It is solved by blops of grease on the end of the stops. Very very simple job. Hope that helps

wheel noises

the noise is coming from the front axle a loud grinding banging noise i thought it could be the cv joint it was fine until i took her off roading and shes old so she is starting to show her faults

KING

jack it

Jack up your chassis at the front and give everything a spin, wobble and see whats what, its easy to diagnose stuff this way as you can get in there and look....

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Grinder

As well as the suggested options, check for things like trapped stones, or the protection plate, if your model has them fitted they regularly get bashed and rub on the disc. Stones or other debris gets trapped between the plate and the disc also.
Check the disc pads are not worn and grinding, ot that debris has not embedded itself into the face of the friction material on the disc pad.

Its never easy to guess a

Its never easy to guess a sound by reading it. but I did have a problem that I would have used the same discription as you did. what was happening was my free wheeling hub had fallen apart inside and somehow engaged itself. this then drove the halfshaft and caused a noise like a low speed gear grinding from the front of the car especialy when turning.

one of the other symtoms was heavy fuel consumption.
