Rad Caps/ overheating

Forum:

Hello all,

I recently purchased a daihatsu hi jet 1.2 diesel van, and on a journey from work, the metal pipe in the engine bay (under drivers seat) burst and the expansion tank pipe broke off. Anyway after brazing the part back together, refilling and bleeding the system, the car is still overheating (only when sitting in traffic i might add, on long runs it is fine). I have checked the thermostat and the water pump and both are fine and i am sure i have bleed the system of air thouroughly, so the only thing i think that it could be is the rad caps themselves, but i have no idea where to purchase them from or if it is definitely the caps, i was wondering if any of you guys could think of any other problems that it could be and also if you knew of anywhere i could get some rad caps.

Thanks

Tom

Rad Caps

If when the engine is at normal the hoses are soft then the system is not pressurising and will run hot and lose water. This can be caused by the rubber seals on the Rad and inline caps. You can sometimes cure it using polythene for a short period and to get you home but it isn't alway that succesful. The caps are not expensive and if in doubt replace. I had a hijet which overheated and I repl;aced the in line cap beneath the passenger seat and it still run at normal.
