ECU Tuning on a rolling road for a 96 sporty

Forum:

as it says in the title, all sorts cars get ecus tuned on a rolling road so i was wondering if it was worth doing to a sporty to get better perfomance off road whilst keeping the car road legal. if i did decide to go in and get it done what would i need to ask to get improved as i have no idea of what goes on?

many thanks

tom

I`d say its pointless tbh.

I`d say its pointless tbh.
Your better off getting a new dizzy cap, leads, plugs and a damn good oil change.
If your wanting performance, I`d suggest a decat, and larger tubing to the airbox from outside (like a snorkel).
Apart from that it`s only a single cam 1.6 16V!!!!!!

Mud makes excellent Toothpaste.

In Tune

Definately worth doing as this improves the engine efficiency as well as performance and MPG.

Two types of tuning are available, one is a modified ECU or a chip which attaches to the ECU to give improved power, and less MPG, these power based units are no good for off road work. Engines are manufactured with reasonable low end torque for off road work and reasonable on road performance, these units give better results at the higher eng of the RPM range.

The better option is the option of tuning the original unit for enhanced performance, this optimises all the original settings and essentially fine tunes the engine.
Bear in mind that manufacturers use average settings for everything, this merely optimises these settings and will account for everything from engine wear to the spark plugs you use.

Tuning

I agree with assasin on this one. Yes keeping the car well serviced will improve performance but if you want to get the most out of what you have then a rolling road ECU enhancement or re chip will do that. Keep away from the crap sold on ebay and go for a specilised tuner. Nearly all ECu's can be chipped to improve performance as Manufacturers set them for optimum performance, as assasin points out.

It depends on what you are trying to achive but be mindful of the fact that the car isn't a Mini but a 4x4 and if you push them they will drink fuel and will become unstable on corners and bends. These were built for both road use and off road use and although they are good their centre of gravity, design and weight are not best suited to tearing around the roads.
