this ones really weird - if the engine bay is warm i cant get the bonnet to release. I have to wait until it goes cold and then it releases. The cable appears to operate and runs freely. Long shot i know but has anyone any ideas?

Heat expands steel. Is the inner cable a fraction too long. Does the inner cable need shortening?
you were right!!
i crimped onto the underside of the nipple a spacer which effectively made the cable shorter and the bonnet now opens with a "ping" just as it should - good shout that man!!
