vibration 92 sporty

Forum:

hi all i have a 92 sporty elxi super car and i spent the last 2 weeks sorting the servicing welding and waxyoiling her the only thing that bugs me is a drive line vibe from below 2000rpm goes above that and in can be in 3rd 4th or 5th i change and checked trans oils greased prop etc striped auto hubs all ok all i can find in a minor weep on front diff driveshaft seal this is my first sporty before that i had scooby justy and a series 3 landy i think it may be my driving style to high a gear too low revs

what do yo guys think

So the vibration relaits to

So the vibration relaits to engine speed, not road speed? Couse if it's road speed , I would sugest a prop shaft being out of balance.

still not sure

deffo no wheel needing a balance done that had all four done if im in first gear ok 2345 below 2000rpm vibrates go 1 rpm above smoothes out fine its like im triying to pull away in to high a gear like if was in 5 doing 50 drop down to a 30 zone i need to be in 3rd if i was in 4th i be around 1800rpm and it vibrate to 2000rpm then be ok

got me miffed

vibe's

gavyn321 i have the same porbs as you descibe if you manage to sort it out please let me know it is almost becoming a pain to drive

VIBES

It's worth checking your tyres for lumps. I have an Audi and it vibrated and that turned out to be a lump on the tread, not the side walls, where the inner part had obviously failed and allowed a slight hump to develop. The lump/hump couldn't be seen but you could just about feel it with the palm of your hand. Once that one tyre was renewed the vibration totally dissappeared. Worth a look as you seemed to have looked at most possibilities . Like wise some meaty treaded tyres can cause a rumble on some roads.

Is there a lack of power at

Is there a lack of power at the same time as the vibration? If so could be a misfire on one cylinder? Clasping at straws slightly...
Another posibility (just came to me after reading another post) is that the spigot baring has disintergrated. This baring lives in the centre of the fly wheel, and holds the front end of the gearbox input shaft. Without this baring the input shaft may be 'floping' about (minutly). It would be posible that over 2000rpm the shaft goes beyond it's simpathetic vibration threshold, and stops vibrating. Just as an out of balance wheel will only cause problems at certain road speeds. Unfortunatly to check this out you will have to take either the engine or the gearbox out. Has the clutch been changed recently, or has it been in for a long time? Normally the spigot baring is changed at the same time as the clutch and thrust baring.

no lack of power

hi nev ther does not seem to be any lack of power just the vibe below 2000rpm im just starting to think its my driving style checked over engine prop hubs all seem to be ok more like im in to hi a gear for engine rpm im sure most would vibrate 1500rpm 5 gear

clutch changed 15k ago

hi nev from my service record the clutch was done at 85k just going over 100k now and the spiggot was done so it says on the breakown bill so still not sure could be the prop as it can get abit viby on the over run a low speeds but as this is my first sporty i dont have a bench mark would other vibe in 5th gear below 2000rpm

samantha

Prop would be road speed

Prop would be road speed relaited, not engine speed. Not wanting to cast aspersions, but just becouse a garage say's they changed the spigot bearing when they did a clutch doesn't meen they actualy did... Do you get the vibration if you rev the engine with the car parkrd and the clutch down? How about the clutch up, but the gearbox in nutral? Or try a bit further along the drive train, put the transfure in nutral, and the gearbox in gear, but again your starting to move into road speed relaited stuff here.

still not sure

right nev here goes

no vibration when still and reving clutch in or out trans box in neutral or on the bite

out on road ok in 1st and 2nd gears

3rd if below 2000rpm around 10mph
4th if below 2000rpm around 20 mph
5th if below 2000rpm around 30mph

fine above 2000rpm top 3 gears
and ok through rev range in 1st and 2nd

now as i dont know anybody with a sporty here for me to try

the problem my just be my driving stle trying to pull in to high a gear

i can drive around the problem

ie 3rd 30mph
4th 35mph
5th 35mph

is there really a problem

or would every sporty do the same thing

if you where in 5th gear doing 25 what would happen
or 4th below 30mph
or 3rd below 15 mph

there is no clunks to go with the vibe

sam

You may be right. Sorry,

You may be right. Sorry, but without having the truk to drive, I'm out of ideas for a mecanical solution...

Having now gotten my Sporti

Having now gotten my Sporti on the road, I think it may just be more reves required. Mine vibrates like made up to about 1200 in 2nd, and up to about 1600 or so in higher gears. However it is just a 'asking too much' vib, not a 'I'm about to explode' type death ratle. Best I can do without experiancing your perticular brand of vibrations. Biggrin

Wheel balance.

Wheels out of balance. Try exchanging front and rear wheels.

Low rev vibes

My Fourtrak does similarly. It could be a Transfer box problem. Try driving 4WD Low range and check if vibrations translate to the lower speeds. Don't know gear ratios on Sporty but if the vibes still happen below 2000rpm it might be a TB problem?
