4WD Problem

Forum:

2 problems, easy one first. Does anyone know the maximum weight allowed in the 'boot' area of a Fourtrak, with 2 young kids in the back seat.
Now we get painful,in 4WD when steering with more than one full turn of the steering wheel, the front wheels try to stop with a grating sound and the whole vehicle kind of judders around the corner, only the power of the engine keeps them turning. No problems in 2WD. Any ideas Unknw

Turning in 4x4

Yo Abz,

Have the same problem and can't find the answer to it yet.
Maybe someone else knows...???

The turning in a circle thing

The turning in a circle thing, don't do it on a serface with traction. The front and rear axles are basicly fighting each other, as the front axle does a tighter turn than the back. Yet both axles are trying to drive at the same speed. The grating noise is the tyres being forced to spin, or drage to alow the car to turn. 4wd is for OFF ROAD only. You'll stress the entire drive train using 4wd when you have decent grip.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

What size tyres are you runni

What size tyres are you running? Are they standard width on standard rims? If not, then your tyres could be fouling on inner guard/springs, ect. Look for polished areas on the inner guard area. Mine touch on full lock on the spring, as well as the brake line guard that bolts on where the flexible brake hose meets the body. Steering stop adjustment can be made. Look at the rear of the swivel housing, for an odd bolt with a locking nut on it. Adjust this outwards for less steering.
As for maximum weights, check your manufacturers plate on the firewall (baulkhead) on the right hand side, near the windscreen washer bottle. For European markets it specifies 4 differing weights, all on the right hand side of the plate. From top to bottom these are, Gross vehicle weight, Gross combination weight, Maximum permissable front axle weight, Maximum permissable rear axle weight.

Thanks for all info

Thanks for the information,I have looked at the plate on the bulk head, unfortunately this seems to have been replaced at some stage as it now only shows the chassis number. Can someone tell me the weights for a 1990 Fourtrak.
Any information as to the colour codes would also be helpful, the colours painted on my truck are a burgandy over silver.

See if you can find someone else with a Fourtrak, and check their plate.

wheels and colours

Firstly look in the engine bay and find a sticker , normally a black sticker) with the colour code, post it on here and i will tell u the excact colour. If the sticker has gone then what year is your vehicle and i can give you some codes for burgandy. (i do s.m.a.r.t. repairs for a living so i have about 32,000 car colours on record).

The noise u are hearing os probably axle wind up. NEVER use 4wd on tarmac or non slippery suface. If it stops wanting to go forward, put the wheels back to straight ahead, jack up the vehicle, bith front wheels, and it will realse the tension. I know it sounds strangw but beleive me it works. If you keep on trying it with the noise u will beak something, guaranteed.

Color codes

Hi there,
There should be a plate on the fire wall towords the cabine on the right or left side and here is the details about the car, incluting color codes. On mine I have found an extra label behind the insulation next to the original one. Try to look there.

i know whats wrong

i think that i can sort out the problem.

basically the tyres on the front although the "same " sizes marked on the tyre are "different" geometrically,

basically the circumference of the fronts are different from the back.

so either disengauge the wheel locks to the front difs or if you cant buy four new tyres of the same size or make sure that all the tyres are the same brand and sizes.ie same circumference all over

dont drive on tarnac roads ith 4wd on or you will destroy some parts of the transmition system.
