confusing sportrak

Forum:

hi all recently got a 1997 P plate sportrak riviera 1.6.I need to replace shockers main dealer tells me that it comes up on there data base as being fitted with electric all singing all dancing superduper ones.I have been under it and there is no sign of it ever having had them.also the switch is there for electric mirrors also dont look like ever had them and there is no sign of it ever having courtesy lights fitted. The chassis number matches up so has any one out there got an explanation?

Confused You May Be

Over the years many people repair, modify or alter vehicles, it may be that someone has replaced the electric ones with normal (considerably cheaper) units, and removed the wiring.

Switches for electric mirrors were fitted, as was the wiring too all models, but if electric mirrors were not a standard fit, or an option, not necessarily fitted to your vehicle. These too may have been replaced with non electrical units, or simply had the doors replaced with secondhand ones without electric mirrors.

Bear in mind that your vehicle is 11 years old, it may have been used off road regularly and suffered considerable amounts of superficial damage, i.e. mirrors regularly damaged.

There are many possibilities, we can only speculate.

Addind to that I have

Addind to that I have noticed a tendencey by our friendly Japanise fellows at the Daihatsu factory to put diffrent spec on the same car just becouse they felt like a change... or so it appears sometimes.

Also I don't know if the same is true of the Sporti, but the 4traks all came into the country as top spec, then were striped back to what the individual customer ordered here. This alowed for cheaper production, as all cars the same. Maybe your car was built with the 'extras' but wasn't sold with them, as original owner went for thr cheaper option.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

thanks

I thought that I would say thank you for the comments to my "confusing" sportrak. But However here we go again. The ignition barrel seems to be B ed up.the key goes in but refuses to turn and release steering lock.Is this a common problem or have I got the gremlin again?I have a bit of a problem at present with available time so has any one got any clues as to whether it might be the switch at the end of the barrel or the barrel siezed up.I might just be a cynical old git but I am beginning to think that whilst the person I bought it off didnt exactly lie but didnt tell all the truth.I hasten to add that I didnt expect an immaculate veh at 11 years old I'm probably the eejit cos when I sell a veh usually tell the story warts and all.Right had whinge. thanks again for all your comments and info.

Ign.Barrel Problem

Silly question but have you turned the steering whel to the passenger side before you turn the key? It takes the pressure off the lock barrel and allows it to turn. I've also noticed that the original keys seem to wear and bend/twist which prevent them from operating the barrel correctly. It may be worth trying the spare or getting a new one cut.

There was an ign. barrel on ebay for sell with keys if it has jammed. Replacement is quite simple.

Ignition key problems

Hi.

had problems with my key not releasing the barrel lock, wiggling the steering wheel to ease the pressure did not help. Part of the problem was the key had crud stuck to it, ( I tended to use this key to give my pipe a prod and root out if its not burning right, now have a delightful pipe knife with a small poker on it) . Cleaned key, and sprayed loads of WD40 into ingnition barrel, lots of wiggles, insertions, full movements of key in barrel, left for a while and blew compressed air through the barrel. Barrel is worn so is key and likely the locking stud into the steering colum (the umpteenth key, copy of copies), but now have no problems as long as when it feels stiff/dry ,i give it a squirt WD40 and alls well.

Well done for winning. Fitting should be easy as I think they all have a multiway plug on now not like the old days when you had to swap 1 wire at a time.

Confused

I agree with assassin that vehicles have been modified over the years and some have had bits added or removed. In the case of the 3 stage dampers not all Sportraks had them, my 1996 Anjou is a case in point. It also has 3 leaf rear springs to give a softer ride. My 91 ELi never had the electric pack for windows, doors or mirrors (ELXi) but I have added them from bits I have got from breakers. The loom is in place for the lot.

Returning to the 3 stage dampers they had a knob on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. The were not that good and once they failed were too expensive to replace and like me a number of owners have replaced them with normal or uprated gas struts.

The manual Mirrors will have a toggle on the insde so you can adjust them but to be honest if you have the switching then look on ebay for some working electric ones from one being broken as it is worth having them.
