Just replaced Thermostat, You know what I'm going to say...

Forum:

All right, I just replaced the thermostat today in my 90' Rocky. I really hope I don't have to tear it apart again. However, its looking like that is route this is going.

The old thermostat was gutted and not actually really there, just the ring and the needle, nothing else. So I have nothing to reference a new one to. I went to my local parts store and told them it was for a 1990 daihatsu rocky. The guy looked it up in his little parts book and brought it out so I'm fairly sure its the correct one.

Now I hear it has to be a specific one, but I have nothing to reference against with the old one not being there.

Now onto the problem, and I'm sure you already know it. Overheating!!!
It heats up, I turn it off, there is a gurgling sound, and yeah.

I read a few posts here and went out opened my heater vent let everything flow through. I topped it off yet I am still having the problem.

I know its not the head gasket or anything else leaking because when the old "thermostat" was in it never would heat up so thus I didn't get the problem described herein.

Any advice?

Thermostat.

If it ran OK before you changed the thermostat I bet the mechanic sold you the wrong type of thermostat. Sporty is a longer version than a normal thermostat. It reaches further into the engine block.
If you surf the net you will find supplier photos of the correct thermostat.

Ok, the picture didn't work.

Ok, the picture didn't work. But let me try to understand this. I figure even if the thermostat isn't long enough. Heat is heat and it should open up. So why would it be a problem? Once the engine is hot enough it should open up and allow coolant to flow.

Boiling point?

It might open up but what temperature will be maintained? If any type of thermostat fits then why do manufactures make different specification thermostats for different motors? Sporty needs a longer thermostat and you cant change Daihatsu specifications unless you want a damaged engine..

I understand that part but

I understand that part but under an open condition it would seem like my heat would actually stay lower than a normal operating engine, rather than overheat.

All right

I'll tell you what, if I still have the problem after I bleed the system better. I'll pull the thermostat and put up a picture, then you guys can tell me if its wrong or not. It's kind of hard to find parts for this thing in the states so I'm hoping its the right one. The face pattern matched up with the old "thermostat."

Spring.

Face pattern of thermostat has nothing to do with its operation. Face pate shows the temperature at which it opens. You need to look at the spring mechanism and wax reservoir.

PS ... when you post the pics, start a new thread. This one has got too jumbled!

Pulled the thermostat and it

Pulled the thermostat and it was definately the wrong one. Went to a couple other auto parts stores and the one they pull up for the Daihatsu Rocky are all the same wrong one.

So until I just put the old faceplate on for now. I'd rather have it run cool while I find the actual replacement rather than have it boiling hot.

Thanks for all the help. I'm sure I'll be asking questions about my idle issue and the o2 sensor next so standby. You've all been great this is a good forum.

pipe

Did you squeeze and massage the water pipes when you refilled the water with the rad cap off - might be a air lock.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
