Burning oil

Forum:

Hi all I am not a new member but having problems getting logged in so got new account.

Anyway to the point...I have a sporty 16valve injection (1994)and it has started to burn oil, there is no oil in the water and no water in the oil , no loss of power and it starts and runs very well .It will still leave most cars at the lights , and has top speed of 90 ish mph on the motorway (or private road wink, wink)it goes well offroad up steep inclines but has an annoying habit of leaving clouds of blue smoke whenever you press hard on the accelerator.

please, please ,please can anyone suggest any causes for this problem and any solutions .

Many thanks for any help given

Eddie

Sounds like general wear. Wha

Sounds like general wear. Whats the milage?

Our burns a bit, but there's no clouds of blue. Might be an idea to source another head, and drop that on.

Mileage on oilburner

Hi the mileage is 74000 so not mega mileage given all my other cars have usually done over 120000 before I buy them and they dont burn oil.

If in doubt give it a CLOUT!!
If it won't fit you are not hitting it hard enough!!
Hit it harder than you thought you needed to!!

oil burning

check the colour of the plugs if they are normal tan to light tan then little or no oil is getting into the cylinders . i would then say valve guide oil seals on the exhaust side and the oil is being burnt off in the cylinder head causing blue smoke

Worn rings

The blue smoke is burnt oil being expelled out of the exhaust.

It could be the piston rings are getting worn, and allowing oil to seep into the combustion chamber.

I think you can get additives to help reduce the amount of oil being burnt.

Oil.

Has the oil worn thin?
When did you last change the oil?
Try a thicker viscosity.
Use an oil additive to coat the metal parts.

Oil change

I have to confess that I havent changed the oil for 12 months or about 8000 miles , and I top up about a pint of oil per week using a multigrade oil .So what type of oil do you suggest I use, cos I dont understand much about the diferences between 10/50 ,10/40 ,15/50 etc can someone help me out please ,and I have just purchased an oil additive to coat the parts but dont want to put it in until I do the oil change cos it wasnt cheap and I dont want to waste it!!

Oil Burning Grand Move

Mine burns oil at only 46000 miles, the dealer suggested giving it an engine flush for a week to clean the piston rings, unfortunately didn't work in my case. It burns about 1 litre per 500 miles. As I bought it second hand, no idea how it was cared for before.
