Poor starting and running Fourtrack

Forum:

Hi this is my first time on.I hope someone can help with my problem as i've run out of ideas. It's a 1987 2.8 non turbo.but i think it's had a replacement engine at sometime. The problem is that it is very difficult to start (turns over ok...new battery fitted)then when it finally starts there are great clouds of black smoke from exhaust..Injectors have been checked by local firm...ok....diesel pump timing is correct....new diesel filter has been fitted. It smokes like hell under load and has very little power...The problem started after the vehicle had been parked up for about 2 weeks...prior to this it ran fine...PLEASE HELP

Hi Wizza

Just a thought..have u topped up the oil recently...since or just before the 2 week lay up of the vehicle.
If there is too much oil in her then u would get the symptoms u describe.
A 2 week lay up should not have any adverse effects...mine lies for weeks at a time without any problems.

When was the last time the glow plugs were renewed..you might want to check them as well.

poor starting and running

Thanks Mike...But the oil level is ok...Would the glow plugs cause this problem once it was running?..Even on a long run 20 miles or so the smoke is just as bad...Is there anything in the pump that could go wrong? Due to standing?..I tried to adjust the (mixture??)screw on the pump, butwhen i adjusted it so there was no smoke it wouldn't pull at all well.

If you lean the mixture out too much, it wont run hot like a petrol engine, just lose power.
I'm stumped as to why this could happen after a couple of weeks sitting. Something stupid hasnt happened, like the air intake has been blocked by something, a rag, or bird built a nest there? sounds stupid, but Ive seen that type of thing happen.
Otherwise, try draining the fuel tank, to see if there is any garbage in there, that may have settled while it was sitting, and is now blocking the fuel intake.

Hope this helps.
Hard starting, Id get the glow plugs checked, but because its hard to start when hot, Id be more inclined to think an air leak in the fuel line. Check for loose filter/ fittings. Bleed the fuel lines using the 10mm bolt on top right of the fuel filter, loosen this, then push repeatedly the pump beside it, till no bubbles come out with the fuel from the bolt. You can also slightly undo the fuel line connection to No.1 injector while the motor is running. When no bubbles appear, tighten the connection.

The extra smoke would be from the extra fuel in the motor because it is not starting quickly. If it smokes like hell when travelling, it could be the mixture screw, Have a look at

for info about finding and adjusting this screw.

Hope this helps
Cheers
David

POOR STARTING AND RUNNING 4 TRACK

Hi David..i'm back again ,i tried bleeding the fuel line..it was exactly the same...i even tried disconnecting the line from the tank to the filter and putting the pipe into a gallon can of diesel in the passenger side foot well, bled it and went for a run again....guess what...exactly the same.Do you think it's worth doing a compression test on the cylinders? Although the cylinder head hasn't been on long ,and the valves were ground in at the time...I cant understand why it was ok before it was garaged for two weeks and then it went like this...am i missing something??..All suggestions always welcome..even the proverbial straw clutching....regards...wizza

POOR STARTING AND RUNNING 4 TRAK

JUST THOUGHT I'D LET YOU KNOW THAT WE DID A COMPRESSION CHECK, AND FOUND NUMBER 2 & 3 CYLINDERS TO BE LOW.WHEN WE TOOK THE HEAD OFF IT WAS PLAIN TO SEE..THE GASKET HAD COMPLETELY BURNED AWAY BETWEEN THEM...WE'LL FIT A NEW ONE AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE SORTED......CHEERS FOR ALL SUGGESTIONS....WIZZA
