Sportrak rear bumper bar

Forum:

After having my rear bumper knocked for the second time in the last month, I have decided to make a rear bar to protect the rear bumper.

Somebody knocked the rear light guard, which twisted the bumper up slightly, so I couldn't open the rear door.

After persuading it back down with a lump of wood and a big hammer, I can open the door again.

I am looking for some advice as to attaching the bar.

I am planning to make a strong bracket from where the tow ball fits, have some 2 1/2" tube running below the level of the lights, and remounting the tow ball on the new bracket.

Would it cause any damage to the chassis if somebody were to hit the bar with its single mounting point, or would it be better to attach it to the chassis on both sides as well?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am considering doing the same as my bumper caught on a big rock last time I was playing in the quarry. I am going to fasten mine on both sides aswell because if you only fasten in the middle if the bumper is hit towards the end ,it will bend and could bend the towbar aswell. I intend to re use the bumper brackets .

If in doubt give it a CLOUT!!
If it won't fit you are not hitting it hard enough!!
Hit it harder than you thought you needed to!!
