Remove catalyst. Any advise.

Forum:

Sporty exhaust down pipe has cracked and thinking of removing/discarding the catalyst. The catalyst is OK except the outer cover is beginning to look rusted but I prefer to discard it rather than refit and have it rot away. Just replaced the rear silencer so thats brand new. Its a 1991 so a catalyst is not an MOT requirement.

Has anyone found any problems after the catalyst has been removed/discarded?
Does removal increase the mpg?
Any recommendation of type/part number for a down pipe for the section from the manifold to the back silencer box?

Sportrak Exhaust

I have de-catted my 91 sporty, which has the fuel injected engine.

I bought a down-pipe for a carb engine.

The Bosal part number is DU53K (1740187632).

Go to www.buypartsby.com.

They sell one for £28 + VAT.

Go to their exhaust systems section, NOT the front pipe section. The Bosal pipes are much cheaper.

I've had no problems at all. Its provided more torque, and the mpg did go up as well. The old cat was really clogged, and it must have been a massive restriction.

Hope this helps.

So is this a straight forward swap for the original cat + downpipe... i.e cheap, easy performance mod? Wink

DU53K

Yes, its a straight swap.

Basically the same as the injection pipe, except its longer at the bottom where the cat normally is.

Took about 10 mins to fit.

Soak all the nuts and bolts in WD40 a few days before so they don't shear off.
