Horn not working on 88 Fourtrack F75

Forum:

Hi all, I`ve just bought a 1988 F75 TURBO DIESEL First impressions are good, engine is a sweet as a nut gearbox a bit noisy but it all works. My only problem is that the horn doesn`t work. I`ve checked continuity to each of the 2 horns and there is power getting there , but when the steering whell centre is pushed nothing. Any ideas before I concede defeat and visit the local auto electrician!!!

Remove the steering wheel.

Remove the steering wheel. Chances are, the contact that touches the ring on the back of the steering wheel has worn away.

HORNS NOT WORKING

I suspect it may well be a worn connector on the steering wheel but before you remove it test the horns by supplying them with a seperate power + and - supply. If they sound then suspect the ring connector beneath the steering wheel. I assume you have checked the fuse although other items that usethe fuse will be dead as well. I assume you have both negative and positive at the horns when the horn is pushed?

Horns can be adjused and can also get water logged and then fail. Their position does normally put them in direct water spray being behind the grill. You may find that adjusting them may cure the problem. Dependant on the horn some have a screw adjuster which if too tight or too loose will not sound the horn others have a nut in the middle which acts the same. If you have a spare horn then try that to confirm a circuit from the horn button.

GOOD LUCK
