antraxx69 ... please do note give false information. Cars built 1992 onwards must have a fitted catalyst when presented for an MOT. No catalyst and its a fail. Check at your MOT station.

thank you mace
hi mace
thanks for your comments please go to www.motester.co,uk
this is a mot site for testers and take the quiz thats were i got the information from. i to thought you had to have a cat "fitted" but according to my local MOT station as long as your vch meets the requirements of the emissions tests and passses and your vch meets the contruction of vch test exhaust and passes no problem .if the cat has been removed incorrectly ie the exhaust leaks then the vch will fail not because the cat has been removed but because the exhaust the leaks.
below is a diect cut, copy and paste of the one of the quiz questions below that is the answer they give
question
. Your vehicle has had its catalytic converter removed and replaced by a normal exhaust silencer but passes the emissions Test. Does it fail the MOT because it hasn't got a catalytic converter when it should have one?
a) No, if it passes the emissions part of the MOT that is acceptable.
b) Yes, the absence of the catalytic converter when the vehicle was originally fitted with one will result in an MOT failure.
c) Yes, because all vehicles must now be fitted with a catalytic converter.
answer
6. Your vehicle has had its catalytic converter removed and replaced by a normal exhaust silencer but passes the emissions Test. Does it fail the MOT because it hasn't got a catalytic converter when it should have one?
a) No, if it passes the emissions part of the MOT that is acceptable
as you can plainly see that is the information given to MOT TESTERS IN THE UK
however my vehicle inspectorate car and light commerical vehicle testing manual (the one the mot stations have) makes no comment on this either way it does mention a cat test but doesnot give an example if a cat has been removed thats why i use the site mentioned above i have not know it to be wrong before
as i said in the orginal post "i would fit the cat for the mot i then MAY remove it and fit my nice new de-cat pipe"
as they seem to update or change the mot regs on a near monthly basis i have the need to check, often, it would not be the first time i have known a station fail a vch for something that is infact a pass therefore i would suggest that each member prior to his/ her mot check the regulations for any updates before going to a test
THERFORE THE INFORMATION I HAVE GIVEN IS TO THE BEST OF MY LIMITED ABILITY IS TRUE IF THE VCH IS MANUFACTURED AFTER AUG 1991 J PLATE A CAT MUST BE FITTED TRUE IF THE CAT IS REMOVED AND THE VCH TAKES THE MOT EMISSION TEST AND PASSES IT IS A PASS TRUE IF THE CAT HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THERE IS A LEAK IT WILL FAIL TRUE
the site you directed me to is a third party supplyer of cats the site i directed you do is for MOT testers which one would i belive
mace thanks once again

10 minute tune-up .... for all American boys.
Years ago, those lovely V8 motors that the Americans like so much were so restricted by their catalytic converters, that another 10% or more horsepower was quickly available by taking a hacksaw to the zorst pipe and throwing the damn converter as far as possible !
Sounded good too.
As an ex-biker, seeing all the type approval crap that goes with modern bikes, I'm glad I ran a short daytona reverse cone megger on my Triumph Trident when all this nanny state Eurobollocks hadn't been invented.
cat req
update
on checking the original post the question asked by the member was"if i can de-cat with a carb downpipe and still pass the mot."
the answer to this i have already posted
as the information given is NOT incorrect i do not see why you have pulled me on it we were not asked if it was legal to remove the cat to which i posted
"clear as mud isnt it i would fit a cat for the MOT once passed i may rush home and replace the offending item with my nice new de-cat pipe and save the cat for next year. not that i would recommed anyone ever doing anything like that" notice the MAY
or if it is a legal requirement to have one fitted which it IS as you pointed out
'any car registered since August 1992 is required to have a fully functional catalytic converter fitted by law.'
as i said yes you can remove it but that doesnt make it legal does it and we are talking about the emissions test here NOT the contstruction and use of and i would not recommend you doing so but saying that its your chioce

MOT station.
Re catalyst:
my information came from a pal who owns a garage with MOT centre. When I decided to remove the cat from my J reg Sporty he checked the regulations. He was emphatic that anything built later than August 1992 would fail if the catalyst has been replaced by a pipe.
Give the AA a telephone call and ask their legal department for a judgement. The AA should be conclusive.
mot station
hi mace
didto
as far as i can make out from both MOT stations and vosa etc there are some points
1 we have agreed that all vch after 91 j k plate and on have to have a cat fitted.. yes
2 if in a situation the cat was removed and the vch still passed the emissions test then a pass is a pass .. yes because if the cat wasnt fitted it would be tested as a non cat vch but the situation is hypothetical as the ecu would change the fuel systems depending on where the lambada sensor was placed either reading as fuel rich or o2 rich and incerese or decrease the settings as required but you might get an increase in performance as mpg as a result but the cat is an important part of the engine management system
3 is it legal to drive the vch that a cat should be fitted to without a cat .. no i think not, even if it is still within the emissions guidelines set down by the powers that be. what would be the situation if the vch passed a roadside test for emissions?
4 it doesnt say on an MOT checklist is a cat fitted the requirement is just that it meet the emissions tests, now saying that is a modern engine in good working order capable of meeting the emission requirements without the cat i dont know?
is it if so why fit a cat? to meet the emission conrols?build better engines?
as i said in the begining i would fit the cat for the mot and then i MAY remove it and so on whether it is legal to so or not is down to others to decide and if somebody whats to take that risk that to is down to them. thats why i said MAY
as i said as clear as mud the question asked was regarding the emissions and not the fitting of said item
personally i would have the cat fitted it would be too much trouble to me to have to rip it off and replace it every year (i would only lose or damage the damn thing anyway) and i dont think the increase in performance is that much but thats not what my fourtrak is about i mean all the areodynamic properties of a house brick, but i have done it to vchs when i have been asked to do so
i just had this image of 2 million boy racers running to their sheds to see if mummy had chucked out that nasty bit or old metal they found while looking for the mower
