Hi all, love my sportrack but today the downpipe sheared off at the manifold, i think the flange came off, but got it home and now need to know if i can de-cat with a carb downpipe and still pass the mot. main question is it was first registed on 15-01-1993 which may be just before the law changed to require a cat, so can anyone help me or should i contact a mot station cheers Dom

hi dom-sporty
the MOT reg for this are simple they DO NOT state that a vch of any age HAS to have a cat fitted just that it meets the emission levels which are achived if a vch is used after a certain year.certinary some vch with very efficent engines should be able to meet the requirements without the cat being fitted.
if you contact a MOT station they should have one the wall a list of the vchs emission gases so you can check it with a gas analyzer
your emissions should be
co at idle speed tailpipe VOL.% CO 0,5
HC level at idle speed PPL 100
co2 level at idle speed VOL.% CO2 14,5-16
o2 level at idle speed VOL. % O2 0,1-0,5
CO content at increased idle speed VOL.% 0,3
however if a vch passes the emissions test without a cat fitted and the vch is meant to have a cat fitted to it will FAIL because the cat has been removed
clear as mud isnt it i would fit a cat for the MOT once passed i may rush home and replace the offending item with my nice new de-cat pipe and save the cat for next year. not that i would recommed anyone ever doing anything like that.
cheers

oops slight fopar
if a vch which is required to have a cat fitted passes the emissions test without the cat being fitted it is a pass not fail as i said previously
sorry reading wrong page

Catless J reg and older.
The last freeless cat was the J reg vehicles. Anything K reg and over must have a cat. If K reg and younger have cat removed and still meet the emissions, the car will fail. A cat is compulsory with K reg and younger. Check with your MOT station to confirm.
PS I removed the cat from my J reg and fitted the longer front pipe. Reg J were fitted with cats but J reg run happily without a cat. Absolutely no problems. Runs better than it did with the cat. MOT station confirmed J reg without cat is MOT correct.

sorry mace
if your vch meets the MOT requirements emissions without the cat fitted it is a pass

. Your vehicle has had its catalytic converter removed and replaced by a normal exhaust silencer but passes the emissions Test. Does it fail the MOT because it hasn't got a catalytic converter when it should have one?
a) No, if it passes the emissions part of the MOT that is acceptable

To antraxx69 ... re catalytic converter ... the law.
antraxx69 ... please do note give false information. Cars built 1992 onwards must have a fitted catalyst when presented for an MOT. No catalyst and its a fail. Check at your MOT station.

sorry buddy you are in part wrong
all vch manufactured after 31 7 91 have to have a cat fitted by law however for the emissions test requirments if the cat has been removed and it still pass the emissions test will it pass the mot test and it will go to www.motesters.co.uk and take the quiz q 6 a 1. the question asked above was "if i can de-cat with a carb downpipe and still pass the mot" and the answer is yes you can that doesnt make it legal but you can do it

Hi
According to the page on GOOGLE "CATALYTIC CONVERTORS AND MOT" www.motester.co.uk if it passes the emmisions test then it will pass. I have to admit it was a shock to me and I supported MACE in his answer.
